I have spent the better part of 2 days getting this 10 month old contraption back to some sort of running order. Windows 8....now let me say I'm older, however I do strongly embrace all this new stuff that comes along. No matter what you do or where you go you can always Control Z back to where you were, to proceed to a new adventure.

What we need on this forum is a computer Guru that could Team View on your systems, let you drive and witness what is going on. Take control and zip zap move and shake, restart..... and voila problem solved, old guy happy. I would have paid money to get this crap done and I still don't know if all is well after this back up date and re-boot and all the outer setting I had to re-set along reading volumes of what to do if the moon and stars get out of alignment.

If there was a gun guy out there in cyberspace that could do this, I could only imagine what kind of collection he could have for computer work. I am here to tell you, the true computers fixers are hard to find. Must folks just give up and buy a new model.

Funny you should mention Win 8. I just bought a little laptop barely used for only $125. It had not even been given the free upgrade to 8.1. It took me hours just to figure how to work the installed software. I made the mistake of installing a Win 7 start screen on Win 8 before getting it setup for 8.1. More hours wasted until I realized the update would not install through that shell.

The next problem was installing some old favorite games. It turns out you have to tell the machine that you have admin rights and to run those older programs in XP 3 mode. All told, it took me 3 days to get the thing working properly.

All sorts of ads and try before buy software programs to deal with. Win 8 is definitely a new low for Microsoft.

Good honest local computer techs ~ like gunsmiths ~ are well worth every penny.

Hi,

I'd vote for gunsmiths first: when a good smith gets done with your gun, you're pretty sure it's gonna work for quite a while! ;)

JPGLSG,
Ask and you shall receive! :D
I just called my brother about this. He is a computer guy who was a computer tech at MDU Resources (Montana-Dakota Utilities) who is now out on his own. He runs a computer repair operation out of his home and does exactly this kind of work. He also owns a Ruger #1 and a 10-22, so I think he qualifies as a Ruger Guy.
Anyway, he said he would sign up for an account and be happy to do any kind of Team View repair work anybody would want. When he gets his user name and account, I'll post back on here to let you know it is him.

Hello!

I'm ndcowboy's brother. As he mentioned, I've got a background in computer tech - a couple years working in small shops in western North Dakota, and then another three years (two as our help desk's team lead, one as the manager) working for MDU Resources at the corporate headquarters. Since I quit there, I've been doing repairs locally, and I'd be happy to branch out to doing remote support again.

And I love my #1. I've been slowly collecting guns (which is a very small number compared to the board average, I'm sure), but I keep coming back to it as my go-to rifle when it's time to hunt.

Yeah, LLC is my brother. He's a terrible shot (had to say it because he's my brother and that's what we do) but he's good with computers.

I'm actually tinkering with a Chromebook right now. Surprisingly good performance for the money.

Well oaky Cowboy and LLC why don't you get your game plan together on how you could assist any of the Forum Members with super conductor help, all the details. I would think you could contact one of the Moderators and place your offer for computer services in one of the sections of the index board as a sticky note so that it is always there.

LLC I'll be reaching out to you as soon as I get back from my next adventure. My officejet Pro scanner/printer is having conflict with my system no longer allowing me to do a scan command. I'll have to run down the CD so we can do a reload. The last time I tried to do it all kinds of crap happened and Ms. Lefty just looked at me and said Oh My, the language coming from your cave.

Thanks
