I picked up this commercial Plainfield M1 carbine about a month ago. Plainfield was out of Dunellen, NJ and while they never served in the US Military, several police agencies had these and they were shipped occasionally to foreign and 3rd world countries. Plainfield's have even been seen in some CMP shipments. This one has no import markings, but with the cost being half of a US Military issue gun, I decided to give it a try. I took it out this morning since I have a D-Day shoot this weekend where I want to enter this gun to sight it in. Using Sellior & Bellot 110 grain FMJ, this gun isn't too bad for accuracy. I can probably do a little better with handloads if I decide I want to try some. After I sighted it in it did pretty well in rapid fire on a silhouette target, definitely would ruin your day.

Plainfields aren't up to USGI standards, but most of them are pretty good guns. They were made with cast receivers and usually mostly surplus USGI parts. They're certainly better than the late Universals with the stamped op-rods and other non-GI modifications.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Plainfield (or Fed Ord or National Ord) M1 carbine and shoot it, if the price were right (say, half of what a real USGI carbine would cost). A Universal would have to be real cheap for me to be interested in it.

Good purchase, have fun with it!

I agree; an M1 Carbine can for certain, ruin somebody's day. I've always enjoyed shooting the M1 and M2. With the barrel shortened three or four inches you wouldn't believe what the M2 sounds like.

Does it sound anything like a Federal prison cell door slamming shut? :?

Heh, yup, that too. Actually what I had in mind was; it sounds very much like a .30 cal machine gun.
