I took the New Service out today with some Magtech .45 Colt ammo that I had lying around. I found according to the serial number record that it was made in 1933 even though it has the earlier non-tapered barrel. Apparently Colt was not above recycling parts off the 1909's they had sent back to the factory. According to the guys at the Colt Forum it was one of 1,000 that had this done. (I love it). Either way it shoots very well. I had a little trouble getting used to that grip frame and its still a pain to reach that trigger even with the adaptor. Once I got used to it though it proved pretty accurate one handed.

I have larger than average hands, but have always shot my NSs two-handed, especially the .38-40, which has a 7 1/2" barrel. Helps a lot; they tend to be very accurate if in good shape.

I have, however, seen period photos of shooters (police) qualifying with NS .45s and civilians paper punching with New Service Targets and Shooting Masters. All were shooting one-handed "duelist" style. That's just how they dood it back then.

You know, I've been wanting a New Service .45 Colt. You've just shown me a strong argument. Lowest price I've seen though is about $700.

There was one in 45 acp in a local shop for 450ish but it had been beat, polished to oblivion, reblued, and beat again. Completely unserviceable otherwise I would own it. Yours looks like a keeper though. Congrats on a nice one.

I had always wished Colt would have given the New Service the "Python treatment", and corresponded with them about that, but no interest.

I had thought it sort of neat to have a three gun set, a Diamondback, a Python and a big framed olt DA, all look-alikes.

If ya'll don't mind, here's my old New Service of long ago. It was my first custom gun.

Great photo!!! Your Colt New Service shoots well and has 'The Look' . I love a revolver with some honest wear.
