Cleaning game...

Man, I sure hope that photo is staged.
I can imagine that child being traumatized by scary dreams later on in life. But subsistense life never bothered mankind before, so who knows.

When I think of gutting an animal, I'm reminded of something Han Solo said in Star Wars... "and I thought they smelled bad... on the outside" :)

Looks normal for the little kid. I remember when my daughter was 5 or 6, don't know exactly but she was small. She came down to the shed when I was getting ready to clean a deer. She set down beside the deer and started rubbing it and talking about how pretty it was. I was thinking well this is not good, She probably won't ever eat deer again... and in the same breath she looked at me and said I bet it's going to be good, when we going to eat it. 😀😃

Seems I recall an Anthony Bourdain show when he visited a coastal village in the great north & the natives butchered a seal in similar fashion. They would cut awhile & nibble a while.
Bourdain was gifted the most prized part. An eyeball. Caused quite a stir with some viewers.

I think that's probably somewhat normal up in the Northwest / Alaska where I'm betting that photo was taken. Doubt it was staged. During the height of my deer hunting days in Upstate NY it was not unusual to have 6-8 guys butchering 3-4 deer at a time in the finished basement area of the "Head Hunter"s house while wife was going up and down doing laundry and the kids and dogs were running around. Dogs would grab scraps that dropped. But the tables and equipment were spotless and it was much preferred than going to a commercial butcher.
Edit: I agree with jspick bekow - that’s not a ferret. It’s leg fur cut and pulled down towards the hoof (at least appears to me).

I really don't get the negative comments. I don't see a ferret. I do see caribou feet. That kid isn't traumatized. That is normal for those of us who subsist on wildlife. And actually that kid will be more mentally balanced than those who are making the negative comments. One thing I wouldn't do is leave the feet on the legs. Hair can get everywhere.

Driving up to Alaska in a small camper I was cooking hamburgers and remarked to small daughter we were having Bambi burgers. SWMBO gave me hell....kid cried. Bad daddy!
Did not make a permanent mark on child who is now a carnivore loving rare steaks......OTOH now married to a SWMBO who supports my bad habits.

Watching Bambi would have been way more traumatic than that.

When it's -15degF, or colder! outside, you have to improvise.

My older brother spent 5yrs in Anchorage, AK and 5yrs in Great Falls Montana, as well as 4.5yrs in Loring, ME while in the Airforce. He dressed out deer, elk, and a moose in an attached garage hanging the game from the rafters. Not to mention the fish!
I've deboned, cut, and wrapped tons of deer using the kitchen table and sink.
Having had bad to disastrous experiences with commercial processors, I don't trust them. I do it myself so it's done RIGHT.

NO WAY would my wife tolerate the mess in the photo! But, you CAN eat off our floors! Obviously we have!

Growing up we dressed out lots of deer in an attached garage hanging the game from the rafters as did a few of our neighbors. Dad hung the Deer in the garage to keep them cool and away from the dogs.
We deboned, cut and wrapped lots of deer on a picnic table in the garage or in the kitchen on the table if it was too cold outside.

A friend returned from a Long Range fishing triop in the waters off of Baja. A fourteen- or sixteen-day trip. Had a dozen of us cleaning, butchering, and wrapping Dorado, Wahoo, and tuna in the kitchen, back porch and various tables.

The picture makes me think of those "Find the Hidden Object" games on the 'net!
