Claymores, C-4, and Det cord

Found buried near Pine AZ. Somebody was seriously stocking up.

80 M112 blocks of military C4 explosive
Nine M18A1 Claymore antipersonnel mines with firing devices

The couple who bought the property were clearing land for a horse corral (cali-forny runaways). I imagine the dozer operator needed to change his pants when he noticed the stuff!

I worked in munitions for years and we kept tight control of our inventory, and I know the Army did too from working with them. It would not surprise me if this stuff went to Mexico as military aid and then came back across as black market. That is a lot of ordnance to be missing from an inventory.

I don't know for sure, but I think it is C4.

Yup.... but let's not forget the ball bearings. They're a very important part of the claymore's purpose. All the claymores we had set around our firebase were booby trapped.... if a sapper tried to turn one around, he got a nasty surprise.

For real fun, though, we had fougasse all around the perimeter. We named it after a popular breakfast cereal at the time - "Crispy Critters"

No mention of blasting caps... don't they need those for the C4 and det cord? That's the thing that would have scared the begetters out of me after 20 years.....

Yes, you have to have blasting caps to set these things off. There's no need to be scared of either C4 or the det. cord. It's stable no matter how long it's been setting. Just one of the reasons the Army uses that stuff. Fun stuff to play with.

The dern Claymores is what would scare me.... I'm trying to remember how they are set off... don't they have the cap already installed or do you also have to put one in those.... All i can remember from the class I took is they could be triggered by a several methods.... trip wired, electrically or fuse I think.

Check the photo - notice the two "wells" angled in toward the center? A blasting cap fits in there to detonate it. Two caps can be used - one is command detonated and the other is a trip wire or similar device. You can also use the detonater from a frag.

That's what I was thinking, kind of hard for me to remember from 40+ years ago, I do remember a master sergeant explaining all that... I also remember he carried an uzi sub machine gun ... not an M16.
