Chinese dam collapse

Anyone following this story? China has experienced record flooding, and there are many who expect the massive Three Gorges dam to fail---which would, incidentally, wash away Wuhan. There are also grave concerns about Chinese-engineered dams in other countries. I know that I won't buy tools made in China, and in general pay attention to country of origin in all purchases. I sure wouldn't want to live downstream from a Chinese-made dam.
 
The 400 million people downstream from that dam are gonna be in a world of hurt if it fails.

That area is also a major manufacturing area for prescription and OTC drugs. It might be wise to lay in an extra supply of any drugs you need, just in case things go poorly with the dam.
 
They will probably wish they had used Mexicans to build them....

As for those cheap Chinese tools... I've always wondered what kind of tools the mechanics and machinist in China use.... I suspect they would not touch any of the ones shipped over here.

Different dam . . .

"State broadcaster CCTV reported the dam on the Chuhe River in Anhui province was destroyed with explosives early Sunday morning, after which the water level was expected to drop by 70 centimeters (more than 2 feet)."


However . . .

"In a rare revelation, Beijing has admitted that its 2.4-kilometer Three Gorges Dam spanning the Yangtze River in Hubei province “deformed slightly” after record flooding."

"The official Xinhua News Agency quoted the operator of the the world’s largest hydroelectric gravity dam as saying that some nonstructural, peripheral parts of the dam had buckled."

Looks pretty serious. :shock:
 
They'll probably have to invest heavily in reconstruction and not engage in foreign adventures. And they'll be buying heavily in the commodity markets.

I've read all through this virus ordeal people saying you should stock up on extra medicine. Maybe you could explain how you would do that? The drugs I take you need a prescription to get and any doctor I've been to in the past 6 years will only write a prescription for 90 days with one refill totaling 6 months. How do you get extra medicine unless you buy it illegally off the street?

I've seen some Chinese made tools that were pretty sh*tty! And wouldn't touch them.

On the other hand, I've seen some that were pretty decent. For anyone that just needs pliers, screw drivers and crescent wrench to keep in the kitchen "fix it drawer" or to loan out to the neighbors..... they serve a purpose.

I keep a small selection in my truck for minor emergencies. If I lose them... no big deal.

I suspect the better ones are made under American company supervision.

Fox mike did you see the second post in this thread? They are saying a lot of drugs are made in China we should stock up, but it is impossible to do.

It appears some of the world's major drug manufacturers lie downstream from this dam. It's causing some concern. See the above quote.
You might want to read the whole thread. It makes questions like this unnecessary.
 
Drifting off on a slightly different direction in a thread is often fun.... I guess I should worry about the drug thing too.... have to take several heart meds twice a day.

Speaking of driving... y'all know that Mark Twain was the inventor of what has now been called the 'Shaggy Dog Story'? This is where someone starts to tell a story about a certain thing and then get off track and the story goes all over the place but never back to the original item....

The story has been pushed by Indian media, along with other stories critical of China. Not surprising, as they just fought a skirmish on their shared border. However, as noted above, a Chinese hydrologist is now sounding a clear alarm. Depending on whether the warnings are heeded, and how much of the threatened population can be moved, this could take some pressure off the pangolin and other endangered species/Chinese medicinals.
