I became a Marine in 1960, five years after Puller was forced to retire for medical reasons. As he is today he was the: a Legendary Marine. He was so revered that we grunts when faced with a dilemma would ask "what would Chesty do? There was a lot of controversy in the Coros about why he was never awarded the Medal of Honor. However no befor and no one since ever received 5 Navy Crosses and the Army's Silver Star. He was also a Mustang, a Marine that goes from enlisted to officer. Being a Mustang he was very respected by enlisted Marines since he had the same roots. When he died in 1971 many Marines mourned the man and the legend including me.

Not to put the man down one bit but he is just one of many and he got lucky repeatedly .... two of the guys in my father's platoon went into the crowd of Korean refugees going south from the Chosin and killed numerous Chinese soldiers with the butts of their M1s.

Add that to Jack Lucas's quote in 1946 when asked about how he was doing and you gotta love the Marine attitude. Jack replied.... "I have the Congressional Medal of Honor and a new convertible. You know how much tail that gets me"?

General Puller, Didn't get the MOH because of politics just like General O.P. Smith did not. Unfortunately the military is all about politics at the Flag Office level. Both men went way beyond the call of duty.

If your dad survived the Chosin Reservoir, he did it because of General O.P. Smith. If General Smith had followed General's MacArthur or Almond orders you would have never been born, but General Smith followed
common sense and saved the Fleet Marines from the fate of the men of the Army's 31st RCT better know as "Task Force Faith", unfortunately they got over run and destroyed.
