At least mine is this one time. Last night sometime after we went to bed Slick caught a mouse. Now, cats like to bat around their catch a bit before the coup de gra. So where can you play and not have to chase this little creature forever just to bat it around a bit more? When I got up this morning I found a very used up and dead mouse in the bathtub. Apparently Slick dumped him there so he couldn't climb out and spoil his fun. I never cease to wonder at the resourcefulness of members of the animal kingdom.

Hi,

When I was a kid, my Mom had a cat which was a real gopher getter. It got to the point she was afraid to simply step out the door without a good look around first! And being the sensitive and supportive little brats we were, we loved to sing the "Great green gobs of greasy grimy gopher guts" song for her.

Apparently it's a favorite throughout the English speaking world!

I too can attest to the intelligence of cats. Owning 4 currently,, and having had cats continuously for at least 40 years I've seen them do some very intelligent things.

We have cats that can open doors. Cats don't have anything to do other than to sit around 24/7 and figure out how to best a human. They make good use of their time! ;)

A ping pong ball in a tub does keep them in trance for a short while though. A mouse? Why not!

Our Bassett was an indoor dog and used to hide/bury his drooley toys in your shoe or under the edge of the area rug.

Hi,

My cats both open cabinet doors all the time. sometimes they go in, sometimes not. But friends had one that took it a step further. That cat would open a particular pantry door in the kitchen, get inside, and CLOSE the door behind itself so it could take a nap uninterrupted.

I always liked the comedian--name long forgotten--telling about his cat. He said "The only thing my cat keeps me around for is to open those little cans. As soon as it figures that out, I'm out of a job!"

Yeah, they are real smart, like climbing up a tree, and stay there till they die, cause they can’t figure out how to climb down with only one hind paw, and too freaky to ask for help! Yep, real smart.

Don’t know about getting stuck in trees. Never found a skeleton in one.

But we once got a call about one stuck in a storm drain. You know the type that’s a large vault cut into a curb. Lady called and after a good long while the asst. chief got frustrated. We stuck the nozzle of a CO2 extinguisher in and fired off a short blast. Cat came right out.

Woman was all upset about how mean we were to her cat. But the cat never got stuck there again. In fact, probably never went in one again.

After seeing all the stupid stuff cats do, I must have the under achievers of the cat intelligence world.
As I approached the barn door a few days back, one of the wilder group of barn cats saw me and scooted. That goosed the rest and in their haste to run away from whatever, one ran directly into the loader bucket. BONG!!! That really spooked the bunch and in an instant there wasn't a cat in sight.
That's pure brilliance right there.

This cat. Slick, is the only 'mouser' I have ever had and I have had a BUNCH of cats over the years. Another of our cats, Elsie, brought me snakes, frogs, and on one occasion a full grown opossum. The wife called me to look out the window. Here was Elsie, dragging this 'playing opossum' opossum across the back yard. I would have loved to have seen the initial encounter.

We like cats in our house too. And yes, they do tend to be pretty smart. They aren't driven by food like dogs are. Not all dogs but most. Our previous cat, Nixon, loved to play games with me. Back when televisions were larger, he would jump up on top. He liked to sleep up there because it was warm. But we had some little bric-a-brac on top also. He would sit there and knock them off, and I'd have to catch the pieces and put them back. It was just a funny little game he liked over the years. Then those big televisions went away.

Both dogs and cats are like kids, they want attention. Our current cat now, wants someone to be with her while she eats. I know our house without these animals would be really quiet and I hope they are teaching some responsibilities and life lessons to our daughter.

FoxMike, I really like the name Slick. How'd you come up with that name?

I named him Slick, not because of his smooth shiny coat, but because he was a sneaky, pushy kitten and reminded me of a grammar schoolmate Joe. We called him Slick because he was a con artist, ie 'Slick'

Our white cat (not that we actually own her) is a Nazi. How do I know her politics, you may ask. Here are the reasons:

1.) She is snow white

2.) She is convinced that Mrs. Thumbcocker and I were put on earth to serve her.

3.) She is convinced she is better that the black cat.

4.) She hates the dog just because he is a dog despite his attempts to be her friend. (racist)

5.) She holds the dog prisoner in the bathroom or the basement by blocking the door had hissing at him.

6.) She is a master of small unit tactics (unit size of 1) and skillfully uses furniture and appliances as cover to stage ambush attacks on the black cat and the dog.

I have tried to get the black cat and the dog to unite against the racist oppression they are forced to live under but they are still divided and ineffective. When the dog is being held captive Mrs. Thumbcocker or I have to form a convoy to escort him to a place of safety. I wish he would stand up to the oppressor but the psychological warfare whe engages in ahs him cowed.

My cat is 20 months old. Smart, opens kitchen cabinets and hides. Wakes me up at 2 am flushing the toilets. Loves to play in water. He catches his small toys, gets in girlfriends vanity and carries makeup brushes off. Just like watching one of the grandkids!

We used to sing that in boy scouts (Sat night camp fires) circa 1961-64 except "green" was "big".

We have a cat "Jinx" that has pooped in the bath tub drain. Now the wife close`s the bathroom door.

Slick said to tell all that he knows we are talking about him.

My cat comes and goes through the dryer vent, and the closet in the bathroom where the plumbing comes through the floor there. Instead of leaving the closet door open, I installed a cat door. I have to “help” him to go through it!!! When a kitten he could slide under that door to accomplish the same thing. Sheesh!

My ex wife was insane over cats, I couldn't count em. I was issued a MC jacket and the first time I wore it (and last) I stuck my arm in a sleeve and the cat had peed all inside the sleeve!

Hi,

Washing a goose down sleeping bag is quite a joy after a cat pees on it right before a multi day camping trip... ;) While it dried, the cat went to the vet and came home two kitty nuts shorter. Now he doesn't dare venture out of the box when the call comes. Guess he's afraid of what might get cut off if he should become a repeat offender?

Rick C

The wife and I are dog people but we somehow have had at least 1 cat in the house over the years. Our vet has a sign on her wall;
"Dogs have owners, cats have staff".

There are three cats at my house. One, Harley was supposed to be my shop cat. Wifey decided it was too scary for him to stay in the shop at night (where he was perfectly happy) and now he's a house cat (inside/outside). He's arrogant, puts the hurt on neighbor dogs and cats, and averages at least a hundred mice and voles a year. His biggest trick is to catch birds and bring them into the house and turn them loose. Ever tried to catch a very alive Morning Dove in the house? The second one, Sparky, actually belongs to the neighbor down the street. We have a cat door in the garage and she started coming in the garage when she wanted. That escalated to now sleeping on our couch. The third, Cotton, is temporarily staying with us while my son is moving. She's strictly an indoor cat. Her favorite sleeping spot is on my chest while I sit in the recliner. Harley is not at all happy with the current interlopers. Cat drama 24/7.

Never a mourning dove, but a very grumpy blackbird. It sat very still just till I was about 5' from it then it would decide to explore another perch. After a few minutes I seriously considered the pellet rifle. Finally did grab it and turned it loose.
