Handling characteristics are superb.

Side "Biathlon" harness since replaced with side sling stud.

Very nice. My 77 Compact in 260 Rem works for me. Wish Ruger would offer a broader selection of carbine type rifles. My 7mm-08 Ultra-light is another favorite.

Ruger has come out with 6.5 cartridge :?:

Nice carbine

Whats in the bucket ?

Nice thing about this rig is that with the sporter tube chopped, The Chopper has a very stiff, thick 17.5 inch barrel.

Other mods;

Epoxy bedded action.
Free-floated barrel.
Trigger improved.
Bolt handle flattened, reshaped and drilled, makes for easier left-hand manipulation when wearing gloves.
Ruger factory front sight added {a magnum band size, which fixed the length of the barrel cut}. I have an NECG peep rear sight also.
Had a 1.75-5 scope on it then moved that one to a 9.3x62 and fitted the 3x9 which I really like on it.
Side stud on stock doubles with double slings for middle back carry while skiing and such. Works great and is especially appreciated when trapping, chasing hounds or other such activity that demands two hands or a long hard climb.

The stuff in the bucket is bait. Columbia Ground Squirrels used for coyote trapping. We use our deer and elk rifles for that shooting over the summer. I shot exactly 175 this summer. They have gone under now so it is paper shooting till bear season.

Bait shooting teaches a fellow how to shoot in the field. We don't pack a bench with us. ;)

Reminds me of the old Remington 600. Would you do it again with a lefty?

I sure would enjoy some close ups of that bolt handle modification.......

I was just thinking word for word what you just said.
Now I love the 25bob, but, I think the 6.5 would be the "cat's meow", especially in a short Rem 600 style rifle like this one.

EVR, I did a similar mod to a Ruger MKII stainless .223. I put it in a walnut stock, cut the barrel to 20" and installed a Ruger front sight. It is also blass bedded and free floated. It easily shoots under an inch at 100 yds.

Thanks all.

I'll shoot some pix of the bolt handle when I get my camera back from the wife who has it at the county Fair. It makes the side profile of the rifle a bit flatter and fits in the saddle boot a bit better than does the full, round knob.

RJ, that is a nice looking carbine! I see you have a peep sight, too. BTW, how did you attach the front sight?

Here's another shot of the Chopper.

Here ya go. Funny thing. I flatten a number of bolts. This one had an occlusion in it..., hence I drilled the hole. I kinda like it.

A left handed carbine set up similarly would be super, of course.

"Ruger's" 6.5 is the 6.5 Creedmoor. I have one in a KM77MKIIVT with a 28" barrel.

Nice work EVR!
