Canadian Snowbirds crash

Hi,

I didn't hear about this until this morning, but the Canadian precision flying team, the Snowbirds, lost a plane and crew member yesterday at an air show honoring those dealing with the pandemic. A second crew member survived the crash, but is still in serious condition according to one report. Capt. Jennifer Casey, the team's spokesperson, was killed, and Capt. Richard MacDougall, a team coordinator and pilot of the plane that went down, is the injured member.

Prayers go out for the team and their families after this tragic incident.

I watched the video that's been posted.
Not a very good video but something about
the ejection seats just looks "wrong"
Would not be surprised to hear about a seat
malfunction after whatever was the initial
problem.

If you watch the video I saw, you'll hear a pronounced "pop" as the two jets flew overhead. Almost immediately, the crashed jet rolls away and starts to climb, stalls out and down it comes. Those jets do not have "Zero" seats... They require a bit of airspeed and at least 60-100 feet. It was a really REALLY late ejection.

The jets look like dual engines, but they are single engine aircraft with dual intakes. I have little doubt that there was some kind of engine failure, struggle for altitude, a roll off when it stalled, etc.

Tragic... Just tragic.

Hi,

Years ago, a ground crew member for an F-14 Tomcat told me a 0-0 ejection from that aircraft would launch the seat and crew member about 125-150 feet in the air. Would this be enough to save a crew member caught up in the kind of problem the Canadian team had? And even then, that's assuming the seat would be pointed up, not back or even down.

I think the Canadair CT114 that they fly has a seat that is rated for
zero altitude but needs 90 knots of air speed. The video looked like they
had altitude but I couldn't see any sign of chutes. Again the video
was not to good.
Those planes are about 60 years old and even with great maintenance
and rebuilding you've got to wonder about them.
Seems like Canada could afford something newer.
Of course we just lost a F-22 and an F-35 within a week.....

martin baker made the 14's seats. 0-0. a drogue gun fires a slug up and it pulls out the drogue chute. no wind needed.
as time went on, they even worked on a 0-0-horizon seeking adjustable trust rocket motor. it was tested at Langley nasa.
cant remember if it was a incorporated, but it worked.
sadly, the old seats in the Canadian birds need that speed for the drogue chute to inflate and break the tacks on the container as it deploys.
cant remember the name of the co, but the escapac seat was in the A7, S3, and A4's.
it was a ballon style seat man separation system where the drogue was attached directly to the chute, that went with the man. no speed needed. rocket burnt out...ballon popped man out of seat, pin gets pulled, spreader gun fires at line stretch...blowing shirt of canopy open, inflation.
around the mid 80's....stencil contracted and won the bid to replace the entire navy fleet of ac with their new seat. the 14 retired, stayed with MB, and I believe all the 18's have the stencil seat.
this is why im sad to learn the older craft in Canada haven't been upgraded. the technology is out there.

Bottom line to the tragedy. Engine blew, pilot traded airspeed for altitude, failed to fly the plane to the crash site. So it stalled and did a one turn spin then when ejection took place they were to late and out of the seat envelope. No matter how good the seat if you are NOT in the right position or high enough to get the one swing in the chute it will not end good. Think inverted or 90 degrees and low to the ground. Remember the Female F-14 pilot that was killed while trying to land on the Boat in the same out of envelope situation.
