Unfortunately, it is probably your loss. There are still great deals available on the forums...just have to know what you want and grab it when you see it available. I buy from the forums, more than I do, anywhere else...actually, too much...just ask my wife. :evil:

So...I look forward to the offerings of collectors and other gun-traders like me, offering interesting products, and already having passed inspection. If the fellers on "these" forums tell me their offering is high quality, and/or is very accurate, that's a much better guarantee than I'll ever get buying new from the local gun store.

I don't blame any one from getting all they can from something they are selling and as far as buying new I did not clarify I still buy used guns when I'm looking for something just buy from some one here in town, sometimes I have to wait a log time. about gun shows I have bought 3 guns in gun shows in the past 50 some years.
Is it greed or just prices going up? Guns cost more now than they did back in the day. I found the receipt from a Ruger Mark II it was something like $229 I think. Well you know they cost more these days.
I guess what I'm saying is the prices listed here on the forum are a lot less than the gun stores around. Shipping is cheaper than tax too, gotta remember that. If I buy from a LGS, they will rightfully charge tax, whereas an out of state forum member wouldn't.
I've sold some stuff here too. I know I sold it for less than it was worth, not a lot but some, just because it was on the forum. And no selling commission? Can't beat that either.

Most here, at least I know I do, list guns here cheaper than I KNOW they will bring on GB or at shows. Like to think you are giving fellow Ruger guys a break first..............but I will say this. As of late I have received some pretty insulting offers on some stuff. Seems that now, even a good deal isn't good enough. Some want you to give it to them.

Yes prices are up - but so is my income.
In 1975 I streched the weekly budget and bought a Ruger Standard Auto from stunt pilot Art Scholl - like new in the box $25.
Last month without blinking I sent GTXMONTE $1050 for a Red Pad 1A also like new in the box and included shipping. A more than fair price for a beautiful gun.

I sent one guy a pic of the Redhawks I have that were bought new in 1981. One of the boxes still had the 1981 price sticker on it from the gun shop. I think it was $450 or something similar. Guy seemed insulted when I told him I bought it new and he could SEE what I paid for it and wanted more than that............Where do these idiots come from

Should have told him you'd sell it to him for 1981 dollars adjusted for inflation and a modest 4% annual gain. Bet you were 1/2 that amount.gtxmonte said:

I took the OP's statement to mean that shipping charges were too high to warrant buying off a Forum. UPS & FedEx have been raping us by demanding we use the express overnight services "to prevent theft." It was THEIR employees who were the crooks, and as such, they lost money, so they want all the customers to pay, instead of cleaning up their own house of the crooks. They just became legal crooks, stealing our money instead of our guns.
That is why I use a FFL who ships & receives by USPS. MUCH cheaper & it doesn't have to be overnight, or next day.
The next fees are the transfer fees SOME FFL's charge. I've heard of fees as high as $90 per transaction. It the FFL is a small shop & only receives a dozen guns a week or so, it may take them 5-10 minutes to receive the package, open it, & log it in their book. Then to transfer it out, about 10 minutes or so, unless a phone call to the NICS is a hold up. Here in NC,, to buy a handgun, you need a pistol purchasing permit, or a CCW to receive one,, so no phone call is required. Long guns require the call. But in general, even with a phone call, less than 30 minutes for the total transaction. A $25-$30 transfer fee is not unreasonable for the FFL, as he will have between 20 minutes to maybe 45 minutes of his time invested. And if you are not purchasing the firearm from that FFL, as noted, in most cases, taxes are not required. A $500 firearm, at a store will get about 7%-10% in taxes, so you can add $35-$50 in taxes. At that point, a FFL transfer fee is cheaper than an outright purchase.
So, in general, if you shop around for a good FFL who isn't out to insist on using FedEx or UPS, and who charges a reasonable amount for a transfer,,, you can easily figure out how much extra you'll pay for a gun. You add that to the asking price,,, just like you would in a store when calculating the tax.
Now if the OP is also talking about the "greed" of sellers,,, it's a simple equation. You do not have to buy anything you feel is overpriced. We do it daily as normal shoppers. A good example happened to me this past weekend. I stopped at a yard sale, saw an item, new in package, that I recognized came from a retail store. I get the sales flyers from the store & know what I can buy that item for. At the yard sale,,, they wanted more for it than what I could spend in the store,,, even after the taxes. I politely passed on it.
With guns,,, prices have been rising, and I've seen some guns escalate more than others,,, in just a few years. I lament the days I bought Ruger Single-Sixes for $100-$150, and passed on some because they were $200. And that wasn't too long ago. Or at least it doesn't SEEM that long ago.

Greed can play a factor but then don't buy from them but to say you are done as in no longer looking? don't make sense
Shipping has gone up but there are many reasonable sellers charging a modest amount to ship and if that is reason to stop? seems there re other factors then shipping costs
As others said, there ARE deals out there, just pass the high priced
Personally I have recently gotten some good deals so we differ
