Buy or not buy?

This is the ad. I know nothing about these. Is it a deal?

Ad say: "A T514 or Ruger Mark 1 Target pistol with the factory stamped Ruger muzzle brake. First one I`ve ever seen and I`ve collected Ruger handguns for the last 20 years. Serial number dates it to 1952 (serial number 29XXX) and it has the early and rare factory "Micro" stamped adjustable rear sight and target front sight. Barrel length is the 5 1/4 inch heavy tapered barrel and is more difficult to find than the 6 7/8 inch version.

The trigger lets off with no creep and has little weight to it. The pistol shoots well and functions A1 without any issues. Cosmetically it has wear to the edges from the last 60 years of use but retains 60-70% of its original bluing. Depending on the light, you may make out the initials "SA" lightly scratched on the right side of the forward frame area. Also on the lower side of the barrel are some circular marks, more than likely from a weight being clamped to the barrel at some point (probably for bullseye competition).

Collectors value the muzzle brake alone at at least $100. So, with the rarity of the piece, and the obvious bluing condition, I`m pricing it at $350 or reasonable offer."

It sounds like a fair deal. However,, since he states "or reasonable offer," try to go see it & then make a reasonable offer of say,, $300. If he says "no" you can always go up a bit.

Those are very interesting guns. Not only was the old T514 a tapered barrel (To me a short stubby barrel with a too big for it front site with little grace.) made (as he said) for only a short time, but were in the tapered ear/two piece/flat bolt era. Some collectors need guns with the flat part on top as well as on the bottom. "Street"
has forgotten more about those guns than I'll ever know so hopefully we will get an input from him.

If the muzzel brake is same period as gun then $100 for a NON INC is fair price, making the gun $250 of which I think is a very very good price, depending on condition. If you are at all interested in the older and orginal Rugers, I would get it if I were you. I know I would!

Thanks for the info. This is not really my usual cup of tea but I thought it might be something unusuall or collectable with the factory muzzle brake. Will think on it a bit.

Thanks for the kind words, but you have covered about all that I know about these guns. As far as knowing about the Autos the two people that come to mind are Don Findley and Chad Hiddleson. Both have written books on the subject and what little I know is because I bought their books and read them.

Just to add another note, if the muzzle brake is a "inc" marked one,,, a bit rarer,,, !

You should've jumped on it.........It was offered at 50% or less of it's value.......Early gun, part of first run, muzzle brake, etc. You missed a good one and proves the need for personal reference texts..... 8)

It doesn't take but one gun to pay for all the books that you buy. As I stated before in another post, I was at a gun show in North Carolina in the 80s and there on a dealers table was a MK-1 for $155.00. That was the going rate for a Mk-l back then. Only the dealer didn't know much about Rugers. This was no regular MK-1 it was a T514 with the tapered ears. They were selling for $500 to $600 dollars back then. Well that day I paid for every Ruger book that I had ever bought and every one that I bought in the future. As Hawkeye has stated over and over. "BUY THE BOOKS".

As a matter of fact..........Very recently, I found just such a tapered ear T514 and did jump on it......Good books and trusted authors are treasures......... 8) I added it to the one I bought from Stephen Vogel's estate :wink:

Way to go!!! A little research goes a long way. Those T514s are neat and very hard to find.
