300 win mag for sale locally nice wood, barrel cut, hellish looking muzzle brake installed, looks like the old adjustable shotgun chokes, any ideas on value?

Whatever you decide it's worth don't forget to factor in the cost of having the muzzle properly crowned and (if desired) a better brake installed. If somebody did this work in their garage (and that's what it sounds like) there's a good chance that at the very least the muzzle will need to be crowned just to get acceptable accuracy.

Pick up a used 1B barrel in a smaller caliber and have it rechambered and bored to whatever you want. You may have to go to another nonmag extractor if you leave the mag calibers out. Should cost less than $300 and the half dozen I have had done over the years have shot better than Ruger factory barrels. Those I have left include a 338 Federal, a 338-06, a 6'5 Swede, a 7mm-08, and a 9.3x62.

The seller could/should? take less than $500 if you deal hard nosed on it. The value of a barreled action is @ the price suggested and that barrel is toast. It probably will need a reblue in the bargain.

I agree with the action in good condition being worth about $500 IF and only if, you are doing a project. I would price out what it will actually cost you to return it to original vs. just finding one that hasn't been messed with.

Look at it this way. You could part it out for about $600. Put $400 on the action only. Advertise it here on the classifieds and it'll be gone.....................quickly. Sell the stock set, if it's not beat all to Hell and has any kind of color and contrast for a minimum of $200 The cut off/shortened barrel has zero value but the rib is worth $25-$30. The muzzle break, could be worth something if it's collectible.

I once bought a non prefix 7mm Mag in the AB configuration. The light 22" barrel. I got a deal on it. The caveat was the seller wanted the muzzle brake that was on it It looked just like those found on 1925 Tommy guns. We arraigned to meet again on Sunday before the show closed to seal the deal.

No idea where or who he got to take the muzzle break off but the barrel was ruined, scarred, over heated and anything else the could think of. I got the rifle CHEAP!! Then I waited 30 years trying to find a correct barrel. I finally did but ended up selling the gun to the guy with the barrel so HE could make a complete and correct non prefix 7mm Mag AB.

You certainly could just take the brake off but how short will the barrel end up after re-crowned. At that point you WILL Have made a USED 300 Win Mag worth about $650-$700 at best.

You could re-barrel it. I've bought take offs that have never had a round through them for $100 +- a bit. BUT it does NOT just screw in. If another belted Mag you can use the existing extractor, other wise you need to change it out. The barrel will have to be head spaced. That usually involves turning it back a couple of threads so the extractor cut and the rib or scope blocks end up in the correct place. That requires you to run the chambering reamer in to get the shoulder in the right place. I have done it more than once and it always comes out at about $350 NOT counting the cost of the barrel. Of course you can opt for a custom barrel and then it's just a matter of how much you want to spend. Frankly all fixes other than simply removing the brake and re-crowning it are going to involve more than if you just waited and found another 300 Win Mag in unmolested condition.

The 300 Win Mag just isn't rare enough with VERY few exceptions to make it worth while.

I've pounded a lot of sand down a lot of rat holes in the last 50+ years. Just my take but unless you can do the work yourself? It's a parts rifle IMHO.
