Bulk trash and a flag

I’m Dallas once a month they have bulk trash. I’ve gotten a lot of nice stuff from it over the years, like a mahogany dresser. Lamps, a nice mailbox etc. oh, or a very nice Marshall Amp. Seriously.

But yesterday we were driving and someone had a guitar case. I stopped to see if it had a guitar in it. Nope.

But they had a box with an American flag in it.

Why, why, why would someone throw out an American flag 🇺🇸 🇺🇸🇺🇸????????

It’s actually a flag made by the Goodwill Industries in America. It’s one of those long coffin flags.

A few years ago I found one at the thrift store. And bought a triangular display case for it. (Case is Oak, made in America, by the way.) I guess I’ll do the same for this flag.

My current flag above the bookcase in the living room.

I would have to say that MOST people DO NOT know how to properly dispose of the US flag, be it unserviceable or not. You would think that someone who flies the flag or has one would take the time to find out how to dispose of it the right way, but they don't. Here where I live patriotic organizations (American Legion, VFW, Boys Scouts, etc.) will periodically put ads in the newspapers, etc. about how to properly dispose of them or where to take them to be taken care of but people still just toss them in the trash.

Completely concealing it in the trash is proper. Boy scouts can't burn them anymore because nylon ones melt, very toxic. Cutting it up so it's not a flag also works.

Thanks, and I agree with ya’ll. But this flag is bright and colorful and looks to be in very good to excellent condition.

It was on top of the trash, so I’m thinking they put it there knowing someone would stop and get it. I hope so at least.

On Saturday I saw a flag in an antique mall, folded in the triangle.
Don’t know anything about it, wasn’t marked special like 48 stars or something.
But I just felt uneasy about it laying on a table.
Was I wrong to not rescue it?
Is there nothing wrong with it laying on a table in an antique store?

The U.S. flag is not supposed to be placed on a table for other items to be put on top of it.

But I think folded as it was is fine... but you should have rescued it if possible.

I see no reason to pass on an old worn flag for others to dispose of... I can do that myself with just as much respect.

In fact I have two I need to burn and will probably do it this weekend.
