Built completely from the classifieds....

Hello all, I kept seeing all these 10/22 parts for sale in the classifieds here, so I started buying parts about a year ago. Whenever something that fit my buy list came up for sale, I picked it up. I posted a few "wanted" ads also. Well ladies and gentlemen, here is what I came up with:

My goal was to replicate the 10/22 tactical that came out a little bit back:

But I only wanted the rifle, so I built it myself. I think I did OK, it shoots pretty darn well, and that tactical solutions barrel weighs practically nothing. The QR mount is a bit of overkill, but when I saw it in the classifieds I couldn't turn it down. The trigger is not so good, it's OK, but it really needs to be reworked or maybe replaced by an aftermarket unit. I think this will be quite a nice little woods gun. I asked wbw2 if he minded if we turned this into a "how I built my cheap cusom 10/22" thread and he said post away, so here is my build.

I started with a $100 well used 10/22 and sold the stock and barrel for $40 giving be a net of $60 in the receiver for my build.

Over the next several months I bought the following used from several sites on the net:

Boyds Blaster Stock - $85
Green Mountain Barrel - $90
Simmons Whitetail Classic Scope (new) - $85
Leupold mount and rings - $25

I bead blasted the receiver and trigger housing and finished them with 600 grit wet/dry for a satin finish. The stock was unfinished when I bought it, so there is about 40 hours in it now.

The trigger job was performed by me and it is not perfect....it breaks clean but is still a little heavy. I get it better each time I take it apart however.

This 10/22 had been shot a lot and the firing pin extension was about .005 short resulting in inconsistent firing. I stretched it .010 and filed and stoned it back to square. The result so far is good......it seems to go bang every time you pull the trigger.

The end result was a great project for $345.......not bad considering the fun I had and the skills learned!

I did something very similar.

I bought a used, beat up 10/22 from a buddy for $100.00. I spent quite a bit of time polishing the outside of the barrel with 0000 Steel Wool with the barrel saturated with Break Free CLP and low and behold I managed to get all the rust off and retained a nicely blued barrel.

The bore was horrible also. I totally cleaned it a couple times to get it clean. I then went to work with a .22 Caliber Brass Jag and patches coated with Flitz Metal Polish to polish the bore.

I also did a complete Action / Trigger Job and the result is a smooth 2 1/2 pound trigger that is actually quite crisp.

I then had the barrel shortened and recrowned to 17" (cutting off the front sight in the process. I then had the rear diameter of the barrel immediately in front of the dovetail for the barrel retaining v block milled down to allow me to slip a Green Mountain Silver Aero Barrel Shroud over the Barrel (which was attached with 3 screws drilled & tapped into the barrel where the Shroud contacts the barrel).

Once all that was done I set everything in a Nordic Components AR-22 Aluminum Receiver Chassis Kit. I then added a Stoner Buffer Tube with a 6 Position Collapsable Buttstock, a DPMS Vented Aluminun Carbine Length Free Float Tube, and DPMS Pistol Grip.

I then added a pair of Yankee Hill Machine 1/2" Scope Risers to a set of Weaver 1" High Extension Quad Lock 4x4 Scope Rings to mount a Simmons 1022T 3x9x32mm AO Riflescope I have sitting around here.

Used Ruger 10/22 = $100.00

Nordic Components AR-22 Receiver Chassis Kit = $192.24
Stoner Buffer Tube & 6 Position Collapsable Buttstock = $75.60

I didn't include the price of the Simmons Scope or Butler Creek Flip Open Scope Lens Covers as I had them prior to starting on this project. All the prices include shipping & handling.

Yes this was a very fun project. I am not really sure why but this 10/22 with the modified factory barrel shoots much, much better than I thought a factory 10/22 should shoot.

I plan on another 10/22 project but the next one will probably have a 18" or 20" Bull Barrel. Now I just need to find a complete 10/22 receiver.

That looks great!! I am glad you are happy with the parts you got from me. I am happy to see them in use instead of just sitting in my safe. (which is where my brand new 1/9 twist Volquartson barrel is still sitting for 3 years or more now..............)
