Building 10/22's

Was looking at my stock of gun parts and I have a number of 10/22 stocks and barrels from various projects (and some that were given to me) Soooo,

I think I'm going to build some 10/22's. I love the gun and what you can do with it. Just got some new stripped receivers pretty cheap (still looking for more) and have some trigger groups and the pins, screws, V blocks etc. So I'm going to get some complete bolts and go to town. The black synthetic stocks will probably get Cerakoted something other than Black and I probably will Cerakote the receivers and might even Cerakote some of the barrels I have on hand.

I figured it will be a good project to fill in the slow gunsmithing days. I will of course post pictures of the completed guns. Any thoughts on color combinations? Can be mild or wild.

How about some classic '60s car colors? Pontiac Verdoro Green, Chevy Corvette Bronze, Mopar B5 Blue, Hemi Orange, and so forth?

People are cannibalizing 10-22's and selling parts on the auction sites. Apparently they make $$ at this racket. Why not just buy complete rifles, mod them as you wish, and sell the surplus parts?

I have a lot of the small parts for 10/22's so I rarely buy the minor parts from auction sites unless they are far cheaper than I can buy as a FFL. Receivers and barrels are the biggest expense but you can find them at good prices if you search. I got a lot of my small parts over the years from customers who have had me modify their guns and don't want the old parts. Then, I was fortunate enough to have been given 5 barrels (1 stainless, 1 .920 bull and 3 blued) and 5 stocks (standard wood, synthetic, and even a Butler Creek folding stock) so my biggest expense is the stripped or complete receivers. I can get complete bolts for $30 or less. So all in all I'll be able to build 5 10/22's pretty cheap ($90-$100 each) and it gives me something to do if I don't have any customers guns to fix.

Way too logical! Of all the .22 rimfire rifles out there, and the 10/22 production must be up around 7-million by now, the Ruger 10/22 is probably the easiest one to work on, or modify. Tons of aftermarket parts available, along with receivers and barrels. Tony Kidd makes some really nice stuff.

Some of my 10/22 guns have been violated and parts replaced so often and for so long, I don't even recall where they came from.

I have a 10/22 I bought new in the 70's and it still shoots better (as-shipped but w/o the band) than most of my rebuilt Rugers. Of course, they had never considered all the plastic parts back then.

Tons of aftermarket parts available, along with receivers and barrels. Tony Kidd makes some really nice stuff.

There is an entire cottage industry around the 10/22, probably equal to those for the 1911 and AR's. You can build a "Ruger" 10/22 without a single part supplied by Ruger.
