I am going to buy a new Blackhawk Convertible .45LC/.45AP revolver. I hate the grips on it. Does Ruger sell Rosewood or like grips for this model?

These will work........but pay no attention to the part that says "W/O lock." They will work fine with a lock or not........

There are plenty of custom grip makers around. Ruger is not the only game in town for grips.

It's kind of strange that I've seen lots of people wanting to know where they can buy gun parts for their Ruger. It never dawns on them to try the people that manufacture the guns to buy their parts.

Then on the other hand I've seen some people thinking they had to buy their grips from Ruger.

What you need are plain old XR3-RED profile Blackhawk grips.

hutchman,

I called and spoke with two different sales persons and both said these grips won't fit a New Blackhawk 45LC/45ACP Convertible WITH an internal lock. Do you have any more resources for grips? Thanks.

I'm not sure why Ruger gives this mis-information; it is definitely a detractor from their reputation. I can only guess that it has something to do with the lack of a marker on the grips to drill out the key hole (should you desire) and the risk of splintering the finished surface.

All grips made to fit the NM Blackhawks (except the NM flattop Blackhawks) will fit the those equipped with locks. It really is as plain as that.

Evidently you refuse to believe me. What Ruger is telling you is just not true. Simple as that. Here is the story on Ruger's lock. Long and boring but it explains it. If you still don't want to believe me or Private Schultz, then go ahead and knock yourself out looking for grips.

In 2005 Ruger came out with the New Vaquero. This newer smaller version of the Vaquero had a new steel copy of the old aluminum XR3 grip frame that Ruger used on their single action revolvers from 1953 to 1962. In trying to satisfy the Cowboy Shooter crowd and emulate the Colt, they made the grip frame only 7/16" in width whereas the original XR3 aluminum frame was 1/2" in width. The new locks they had for these grip frames are wider than 7/16" so they stick out on each side of the grip frame. The locks are .480” in width.

This was no problem since they put molded black plastic grips on the New Vaqueros. They are concave in the backs so the locks did not interfere with the grips at all. However if you put a flat backed wood grip on the gun, it needed to have recesses in the backs to fit over the locks. The only guns that have this New Steel XR3 grip frame so far are the New Vaquero, the two 50th Anniversary flat tops (.357 & .44 mag), the Montado, and the now Ruger cataloged .44 special flat top. So, the only guns to have that narrow steel XR3 grip frame are either the New Vaquero or the New Flat Tops. Beware that the new flat tops say Blackhawk on the side of the gun but as I said they are flat top Blackhawks.

OK now on to the regular Blackhawks. Maybe a year or two ago Ruger installed the locks in the aluminum Blackhawk grip frames also. But they left the grip frames at 1/2" in width which is wider than the locks so any flat backed grips do not need any recesses in the backs to clear the locks.

As far as I know, so far none of the stainless grip frames have locks in them except for the stainless New XR3 as used on the New Vaquero and stainless flat tops. I have been told by customers that they called Ruger and were told that the plastic grips sold for the new blackhawks would not fit an older blackhawk because they were made for guns with locks. So even the people at Ruger (well at least the telephone sales peopl) don't know what the hell is going on since those new black plastic Blackhawk grips will fit the Blackhawks as well.

Any flat backed wood grip made to fit the regular Blackhawk XR3-RED sized grip frame will fit the new Blackhawks with the locks in the frames with no problem.

The plastic grips on the regular Blackhawks (non flattops) with locks will fit the older Blackhawks without locks with no problem.

Guys,

It's not a matter of disbelief, it's a matter of getting it right the first time. I am kinda new to the Ruger family and I am still in the learning process (which I hope last a life time). I am very grateful for your experience with these revolvers. Without you guys a lot of people would be making mistakes and wasting a lot of money. Thank you for your expertise and help when dealing with this rookie.

You can take the statements of the above esteemed gripmakers to the bank. They deal with this stuff every day, where the rubber meets the road.

The only lock issue is with the 50th anniversary Blackhawks, New Vaqueros and now the .44Spl Blackhawk and New Vaquero (marked Vaquero) sixguns. That is because these guns have a steel grip frame that is narrower than the lock mechanism. Thusly, they must have a recess milled into the grips for clearance.

The aluminum and steel grip frames of the other single actions (such as yours) are much thicker, thicker than the lock. So there is absolutely no fitment issues whatsoever. Why Ruger can't get this straight is beyond me but they have never been in the aftermarket business and typically bury their heads in the sand with respect to what folks may change about their guns once they take delivery.

I don't think the folks at Ruger are really that stupid. I'm inclined to believe Carl Schultz's scenario that they just don't want any grips that don't have that lock hole drilling dimple in the back put on any of their guns with locks, especially if one obtains the grips from them.

But then again I've heard that they have told other people that the black plastic grips from the regular Blackhawks with locks will not fit the Blackhawks without locks like the stailnless Blackhawks for example. These grips have the dimple so what's the problem there?

I guess there is just no real answer to Ruger's misinformation on grips.

Ruger's CSRs may not be stupid; they ARE just reading from parts sheets and printed info. They are not assemblers or craftsmen. As we;ve noted here many times, they often get the question wrong, if not the answers.

Good information here doesn't require sarcasm, just advice & direction. BL213, keep asking and keep posting! Sooner or later a thread here will save you a pocketful of cash, making it all worth it!

I received the grips today and they fit like a glove. Ruger representatives don't know all the facts, you guys do. Thank you, guys for steering me right.

It just makes you wonder what's going on at Ruger doesn't it?

I just received two pair of beautiful Super Rosewood by Altamont in Illinois. I purchased them from handgungrips.com, also in Illinois but at a cheaper price than the manufacturer. Pick your grips from Altamont's website but buy them from handgungrips.com. My gun is the new Blackhawk Flat Top .41 Mag, made this year. The grips listed to be for the new Vaquaro fit the .41 Mag.Flat Top like a glove. :D

I believe Carl and Cary have it down. I can vouche that the new large-frame Blackhawk plastic grips will indeed fit the older large frame NM guns without interference. However, at least on the stainless (at least on my Vaquero example), it ends up being a little metal proud, relatively evenly all around...somewhat like shrunken original/old walnuts on a 1st Gen Colt. I got the same story from Ruger, by the way: "won't work on the older guns without locks."
