blackhawk 45 colt sights and grips ???

i will be getting a blackhawk chambered in 45 colt that will be used for deer hunting. i wanted to know if i should plan on replacing the stock plastic grips with houge grips? also is there anyone that makes hi viziblity front sights for this gun?

on rugers site they have fiber optic front sights but say there are not to be used on the 45 colt, why? thanks!!

Welcome to the forum. Is the Blackhawk you are getting blued or stainless? If it is blued, you will have to change the front sight to something with interchangeable blades that has a fiber optic offered. If it is stainless, someone may make a blade with a fiber optic insert that can be pinned in place of the factory blade.

I believe they make a fiber optic sight for the MKIII that attaches with a screw that may work with a bit of work.

Add also plan on upgrading the grips. The factory plastic grips are hard on the hands and aren't all the comfortable to me.

thanks for the replys! the gun will be blued. i do belive i will also be replacing the stock grips aswell.

you said i would have to replace it with one that has interchangeable blades. do you know of anyone that makes one? if not how would i go about serching? what would you type in to google? thanks

I have the Weigand sight on my Power #5 and it works great. If you want fiber optic blades, the sights that fit in S&W DX models work in the Weigand.

It's a little strange that you don't even have the gun yet but are asking if you should replace the grips.

Grips on a gun are a purely personal thing. What works for someone else might not work for you. No one else can tell how the gun feels in your hand.

I would wait until you get the gun before worrying about the grips. Since it's a Blackhawk, if you have another Blackhawk with wood grips or know someone that does, you might just change to the wood grips and see how they feel to you before buying anything.

I've heard that some people actually like those black plastic grips. So anything is possible. All I'm trying to say is if you buy something because someone else recommends it, it might not work for you.

Hogue is not the do all end all for grips unless you mean those big bulky things with the finger grooves.

First post here, but if you get a new Blackhawk with the internal lock, the Hogue do not work with this. I had tried a set and when I got into issues, I contacted Hogue and they told me they didn't have a set which would work on the lock version. It had scratched my frame pretty bad too and I wouldn't recommend them. Just to save you some issues... 8)

Just for you info. I took a set of the fiber optic high viz sites off of a Ruger Mark 111 auto and put them on my single six 22 and they fit right on there. However they seem to shoot a little bit high with the rear site lowered all the way down but I need to shoot it a little more to be sure on that aspect. I don't see why they would not work on a Blackhawk if the front is held on with a screw like the single six is. You can order them from Rugers web site I think they were about $45.00 comes with several colors of tubes. You would have to order them for a Mark 111 auto.

What Cary said... I'd strongly suggest you should shoot it with some heavy hunting loads before you change anything out. That will tell you all you need to know about POI and controllability with the stuff you'll be using in the field.

BTW, I regularly shoot 325's at 1200 from this Old Vaquero using 'Vintage' checkered hard rubber grips. I find it easier to shoot the gun offhand if there's some checkering on the grab-handle.

If you try the stock grips and don't like them... look into getting some gun-fighter grips... I here nothing but good things about them... and they sure are purdy.

Nope, the Blackhawk's have front sight bases silver-soldered to the barrels. The stainless versions have a "pinned" in sight blade.

Bowen sells a replacement blade that can be fitted to any Blackhawk front sight base. A slot needs to be cut by a Machinist, however.
