Bizarre incidents..............

The news reported a death of a pedestrian here in Memphis on Park Avenue, a busy thoroughfare near my home. According to the report, a 55 year old man was struck and killed by a trailer that broke away from a pickup truck and jumped the curb and struck the man. Bad enough, but then follow up reports was that the man was absorbed in looking at a porn site on his smart phone that he didn't see the accident unfolding. And, to top it all off, he had arrests for sex molestations dating back to when he was eighteen years old.

Then, in a separate incident, there was a report that a woman had been struck and killed on I-240. She had stopped to see an accident involving a car and a tow truck and was struck and killed when she stepped out of her car. A follow up on that revealed the woman was a man.

And further..., ..........

The lead-in to another story on TV was that "........two bodies were found in a closed funeral home without electricity." Apparently two bodies were prepared for a funeral when the funeral home shut down so everybody just stopped what they were doing and left.

Since I have a first grader at home, we still monitor what is on the television. The news it seems these days is PG13 or worse.

I know it sounds bad but we have just quit watching the news altogether. But before you say anything, tell me, does knowing about these people's deaths help you in anyway? Not that they died for nothing, but not knowing the individual, does it make a difference in how you lead your life? I guess this question is to Bob or anyone else who cares to answer. I'm not being sarcastic, but honestly, when on the news here in Dallas, they talk about a shooting or robbery or fatal car wreck way off in a part of town I haven't even heard of, do I need to know this to be "more informed" ???

I made no such allegation. I did indicate the happenings were bizarre, i.e., unusual, out of the ordinary.

As to the reporting those stories, folks see a commotion going on, maybe even are delayed in traffic, or see police or emergency vehicles, and wonder what happened. Anything someone doesn't know, and wants to know, is news worthy. Such is reporting.

Case in point: Parts of Mississippi recently were flooded, many folks flooded out of their homes. Memphis' Channel 5 news reported that, and people of Memphis immediately were asking how and where to bring food, clothing, or money to help those people. I'm very proud to say that Memphians have very generously risen to such disasters to come to the aid of those victims. The people of Memphis have gathered quantities of safe water for the folks of Flint, Michigan, and Federal Express has donated the planes to take the water up there.

Has knowing the plight of distant folks, or neighbors, made a difference in the way they lead their lives? You're mighty well told it does!

True Story: I was an Alabama Power Co. engineer with a Georgia Power Storm Crew assigned to me in the aftermath of Hurricane Frederick in Mobile. It was about day four or five after the hurricane. The crews had just got spread out and started on the work at hand when I got a call from the office to go to a certain address, talk to the man there and see if we could pull off what we were doing and get his power back on. I was annoyed on a couple of levels. Pulling off one job already started to go set up for another is a very inefficient way to do things. The most common cause of this kind of order was a local politician with a little pull getting special attention. Turned out I was wrong.

I pulled up to the address to be met by a prim little man in an impeccable suit who looked for all the world like George Jefferson, who was standing in front of his funeral home. with big tears welling up in his eyes, he said, "Mr., please, please help me. I need my refrigeration. Some of these folks are starting to stink real bad."

Now that was a man with a problem! We got him back on with all due haste.

Jim Luke, then I guess I won't hear your answer. It's a valid point. There is a lot of time wasted on television news. They must fill a 30 minute time slot. Are you implying it's all relevant to your day to day life? It's really only rational to filter out the stories important to you. That's rational.

Bob's example of the flooding and helping strangers in need is s good example. BUT that is not what I mean. If there is a car wreck in South Fort Worth, which is literally over an hour drive away,do I need to listen to the television news story about it? And yes, this happens here in Dallas on the news.

This is not being cold hearted and callous about helping victims of a flood, it's about focusing on what is important in my world.

In the last year or so, there have been many unusual occurrences in TN.
Personally, I blame it on the overwhelming flood of folks moving here from other places.
I don't doubt that Tennessee lives up to the Volunteer state name. We didn't get that nickname for nothing. Folks here are kind and giving, we live that way, as those who came before us. We are the civilian Marines, first to get involved and true. I love the southern states. Many discussions about it among our folks, we feel a real connection with Texas and their fierce independence.

If one were to notice, there are several members from TN on this forum that post regularly.
