I wonder how much farther these guys could fly in those suits if they weren't carrying those 30-lb brass b@lls.

Miss Penny & I were just discussing wingsuit flight the other night after seeing some on TV. She thinks the guys who do this are crazy. She then looks over at me & says; "You'd do that wouldn't you?" I didn't lie & said "yep!" I think it's fantastic to see how far our technology has come to where we can achieve that kind of experience. I'd love to try it, but I'd have to spend a lot of time re-learning a lot of stuff I've forgotten. Still, the thought of freefalling flight like that,,,,,is exciting!
 
Pretty amazing. I've done a little sport parachuting but this is in a totally different realm. I'm not clear if it is just the perspective of the cameras but it appears that with the wingsuit they actually achieve some lift. The closeness to the terrain that they are "flying" through shows the skill and nerves of these guys. If I were a bit younger I would be seriously tempted.
 
It seems they are "rocketing" right along. Lift per se- I don't think so, more like drag from a parachute. Not enough wing area for lift IMO. Either way-AWESOME!

Gramps: Lift can be obtained by your hand out of a pickup truck. Yes, it is some drag but your hand will create lift. It is shaped correctly for it.

Yes, the suits do create lift and you are right they do create drag. The biggest thing to remember is that the ground is receding away faster then the diver's fall. If you descend 200 ft and the ground is descending 210 ft. you are good. This is a great application of elementary math. Pythagorean theorem? I fall 6 ft. and the ground falls 8 ft. I won't hit the ground. Sounds simple but I would not bet my life on it. The theorem is the angle of release from the helicopter. Just a guess.

It's the old L/D ratio. Applies to anything with any type of air foil. The shuttle had a pretty scary glide ratio. It took about 200mph to keep it at a decent sink rate. "Decent" for a space shuttle or flat iron. The one thing those guys can't do, yet, is to soar or rise to a higher point than their launch altitude. When they can do that I'd be interested. Hang gliders can do it, but not wing suiters.
