Bird feeder question

Just wondering how many keep bird feeders out year-round?

Yep. Wifey and I have 4 hangers out there plus a 3 tier " smorgasbord" table I threw together.
The flocks are fat and happy all year around.

3 hangers and a bird table........birds are pretty happy.........and they seem to be getting used to me.......they come right back when I shoot a squirrel off the perches........ :roll:

Hummingbird feeders are up on my side of the fence all year. Neighbors have seed feeders up all year on the other side.

Yep. Three hangers for the song birds (one with racks on both ends for suet cakes in the winter and stale bread in the summer) One multi feeder for the Hummingbirds, in the summer.

Can't have'em because of the squirrels...I refuse to feed them or spend all of my free time trying to come up with measures they can't defeat. Too many squirrels in my area, shoot one and 2 will take his place. I have finally thrown up my hands...in defeat.

I prefer to feed the squirrels more than the birds. The birds can fly thousands of miles looking for food if need be. The squirrels are stuck here.

I have four squirrel feeders, two bird seed feeders and two suet feeders. But I haven't had anything in them in many months. There were too many woodpeckers coming and hanging around the neighborhood, doing damage to houses so I cut them off. I'll start putting stiff out again soon, keeping a close watch on what's around.

I have at least 10 feeders for the birds feed at some of them hold 7 to 8lbs of sun flower seeds.
I feed 40lbs of black oil sun flower seeds every 1 to 2 weeks. Yes the squirrels eat also.

Used to feed year round, tree rat problems caused me to quit, they destroyed several feeders,just hung on the feeders and emptied contents on the ground. Tried mixing hot pepper powder with the seed, didn't work, pellet gun, killed several, more came to replace them. Had two pear trees, a eating pear and a cooking pear, rare to get a eating pear and most of the cooking pears eaten or hauled off before ripe, had both cut down, let the little jackasses starve!

I have a squirrel proof feeder but I have to put away when black bears are out of hibernation.I have lost about 3 feeders to bears...even had one on a rope and pulley system the bugger grabbed the rope and pulled the whole feeder and bracket down.

I keep a couple up all year, but I'm not as good at keeping them filled in the summer. Plenty of flowers in the yard to keep birds happy when they go to seed.
Hummingbird feeder goes out in the spring and is fun to watch. It's right by a window attached to the house.
Besides squirrels and the occasional coon that take suet, I've seen deer nudge feeders to knock out sunflower seeds and eat it.

I too have squirrel problems but they seem to stop feeding from the feeders once it warms up.



I also put out two hummingbird feeders once spring arrives.

I used to feed birds. I did not really mind the squirrels, but I began to notice that the well fed squirrels began hanging out next door. They ate the bird food and moved in my neighbor's house. I would see them going up and down the walls and in and out of the attic. Then to my surprise, I began to have the same problem except with raccoons. Those guys can really do some damage. No more feeding wildlife for me.

We keep one feeder supplied year round. It took awhile to find a true squirrel proof bird feeder, but the one we are using for the last several years really works. Squirrels tried for awhile to get to the bird feed but then gave up and have not returned other than to eat the seed that falls to the ground. The feeder is a long plastic tube about 2 feet in length, with four spring mounted perches at the bottom facing four feeding holes. The springs will support only up about 1/4 pound so the big birds can't use the feeder (and scare away the little finches, etc.). A cardinal is about the heaviest bird that can use this feeder. If squirrels jump on to the top of the feeder they cannot reach down to where the food openings are, and if they try to slide down the tube they slide right off onto the ground. The feeder holds about 5 pounds of bird seed and in the winter I have to refill it at least weekly. We have it hanging right outside our living room window so that we can watch the birds gathering there to feed.

During winter months I have ten various feeders up (couple for suet cakes and various seed feeders). Great entertainment have my coffee and watching the back yard. I have a few squirrels but they are not much of a problem. When we have a good snow cover the wild turkeys will come in, up to 30 or more. Turkeys landing on a post mounted seed feeder can do some real damage.

My wife has 2 to 3 feeders out all year plus hanging suet blocks in the winter. She enjoys sitting at our dining room window, having her coffee in the morning and watching them. We have squirrels also but they can't get to the bird feeders because of the baffles I installed.

Right now, all of the birds around my property are staying perty-healthy from eating bugs out of cow manure, and the seeds off of the winter grass in my spare pasture. Later on, they'll be pecking at my wild black berries, and when I need to over seed my existing grass, they'll be stealing some of those seeds too. :evil: .

All in all, I figure that I'm already feeding 'em about all that I can afford to, so I reckon that I'll pass on buying them anything extra. :lol: .
