Being a grip maker I've been contacted four or five times to make BFR grips for someone. The callers have invariably heard the same thing most of us have.

Super Blackhawk grips will fit a BFR. I don't make grips on "kind of" or Sort of" fit info. We've all heard that rumor. Well, I can now definitely say it's a rumor. I finally got a customer that was willing to send me his BFR grip frame.

You can see the two frames in the first picture. The BFR on the left looks a little beefier than the SBH frame but it's an illusion. The BFR on the left weighs 8.9 oz. and the SBH weighs 9.5 oz.

As for the fit, you can see a stock SBH grip on the BFR frame. The grip is on the pin and the top and back strap fit as well as you'd expect a stock grip to fit. All the difference is clearly visible on the front strap and where it meets the cylinder frame.

So, if you believe the rumors and order a set of SBH grips for your BFR, this is how you can expect them to fit. Mystery finally solved, well at least for me anyway.

Cary....as you illustrated, the new BFR gripframes are different (new as in post-2001). The old D-Max BFRs used Super Blackhawk gripframes straight from Pine Tree Castings. Those were interchangeable with the Ruger.

Well crap, back to square one. So do the old castings look exactly like the SBH pictured on the right?

I need to know how a customer would know which one he had.

If the BFR has a serial number that starts with "JT", it's the new version....and as you noted those are different. If it doesn't have the JT and the trigger guard is squared, it's identical to a Super Blackhawk.

Thanks Lee.

Same mis-fit I found.

Hmmm.....don't know how I managed to miss your post. I see that your frame has an "8" on the bottom. The one I have has a "10" on it.

Appears to be hand written but won't rub off. I wonder what these numbers are for?
