Soda is in cans or plastic. No more glass.

In California we pay a 5 cent CRV- California Redemption Value - on plastic and aluminum cans. The catch is there is no way to redeem them. They must be sold to recycle centers. The return is based on the price per pound for plastic and aluminum. It is most always South of 5 cents per bottle or can. The state gets the 5 cents, you sell your cans & bottles at a loss to the recyclers. Like I said, a tax and a scam.

It sounds like it is a messed up system in other states. In MI if you sell it full, you have to take it back empty. No real hassle other than actually taking them back. Some stores hand count and pay you back, others have machines that read bar codes and give you a slip to take to the register for your cash.
 
People in Portland OR have been seen buying cases of bottled water with their EBT cards ( food stamp debit card ) and dumping them out in the parking lot to get the 10 cent per bottle recycling refund to fund other ventures not covered by the EBT cards. :shock:
 
Two things:
The machines used to wash recycled bottles are huge-bigger than the average house and if the plant has a high bottling capacity it takes more than one. And it requires heating a lot of water plus the use of caustic soda.
To wash new bottles only requires a rinser which is inserted into the filling line. The bottle is only rinsed on the inside. And they are high speed and can keep up with the high speed fillers.
I used to build washers, electronic bottle inspectors and tunnel pasteurizers. They have also fallen out of favor due to newer technology pasteurizing before bottling. Doesnt use any water that needs to be heated.

Here's a little secret... If the spot price of the material is down, all those recyclables go into the landfill. But how could that be...?
 
So what? So do new glass containers.

It's still cheaper to use new plastic bottles than to collect/transport/handle/process/wash used ones. If this weren't true we'd still be using glass for these applications.

Not sure what the argument is about.

Yes in that narrow instance it is cheaper to wash new than to wash old
What you also need to factor in is the cost of making a new bottle, also the cost of not using the old one (i.e. transportation, storage of trash, landfills, etc.)

It's like just saying buying all the equipment to reload is much more expensive than buying a new box of ammo. There is residual cost savings the more you use and shoot.
