Got to thinking, what the City really needs is this kind of efficiency brought to delivery vehicles. Hence,

Don't knock the Priuses. My wife's Prius averaged 56.8 MPH driving down to my last army reunion in Myrtle Beach, SC. Our average speed was also around 70 MPH. Our savings sure bought a lot of rounds of Coors and Bud.

Saw two Priuses last night that the lights were very dim on. Does that mean that the batteries are about done? Our VW TDI got 47 mpg on the trip last night. A lot more comfy too.

The head lights on my wife's Prius are extremely bright even on low beam, much brighter than my 3 year old ford Taurus. Unless there is an electro/mechanical problem with the Prius you saw, the battery is always charging when the gas engine is running and if the battery did die (warranted for 8 years), the car can run on gas alone. FYI, I am 6'1'' 235 lbs. and an ex college football player, and the Prius is very comfortable for me in either front seat and I don't feel at all crowded. The Prius is one of the best cars we've owned and have now put over 12K miles on it. :)

Might just be they hadn't yet turned on the headlights and were running on DRLs. :?:
I have had the good fortune to have rented a Prius while in St Pete Beach FL and drove the crap out of it. Never had any complaints. Hauled a ton of stuff in it all week. Ran well with all on the Interstate, accelerated with other normal traffic, and also gave great gas mileage. I don't understand why some people hate them simply because they are efficient.

Oh, no doubt of the Priuses (Priii?) being excellent at what they do. They've come a long way too, as I can attest, having driven the current model and one of the first generation.

Actually I was just looking for an excuse to show the video of the Freightliner, which I found to be a little cooler than most econoboxes.....

Even my Corolla.

That machine appears to do an excellent job of what it was built for: fuel economy was NOT one of the design parameters! Perhaps those who don't understand such things may find other threads more enjoyable?

BTW, on Prii, my sister recently traded her Explorer for one. Quite a shift after 20 years and close to a quarter million miles with the Ford. She's running around 45 mpg as an average so far in fairly hilly country. Other than the fact it (or maybe it's her driving style? :oops: ) attracts CHP officers on a certain long downhill stretch, no complaints have been reported.

The VW also has "Hill Hold" built in. The Priuses I mentioned had dim tail lights as well as head lights. Also the were going slower then other traffic.

The only reason they may be going slower than other traffic is the driver is trying to better his over 70MPG driving record. Dim head and tail lights? The Prius has both front and rear LED bulbs. Either you saw the car's DDL's, or you need to schedule your annual eye exam.
