Baltimore bridge collapses after ship strike

I wonder if it will turn out to be the prank of some tech savvy 15 year old who was able to hack the electronics that controlled the ship, and played it like a video game. I'd much prefer that this be the case rather than the Chinese just testing out how they can further disrupt American lives.
Very early " reportage"/commentary did use the words 'sabotage' and 'hacked'

All I know is I'm tired of seeing that damn container canoe outside my office window and miss seeing the bridge.

As for intentional efforts to take down the bridge if it were my diabolical attempt to cause harm I would have considered something that would cause a bit more impact to "something"...more than this place.....yeah at first it had a pretty crazy impact on certain things but we figured it out and it's business as usual here. Biggest impact locally at this time appears to be mostly sentimental.

Wonder if it's too late to invest in Reynolds Wrap stock.....more and more folks are making hats everyday....

Totally agree with your Reynolds Wrap comment. The first week traffic was a total nightmare but now most have figured out when to leave home and what route to take to get wherever. Baltimore traffic sucks on a good day. If there was even a thought of a conspiracy I can assure you that the biggest "hollering" would have come from Dan Rodricks (Baltimore Sun complained in chief). If you wanted to cause chaos then the Conawingo Dam going away would take out the I-95 and probably US Rt 40 bridges as well as B&O and Amtrak bridges over the Susquehanna River. One bridge, Key bridge ,on a major city beltway would be wasted energy.

I noticed after the bridge structure was removed with explosives the ship still has a "bow down" attitude. Does the remaining black top and underlying debris weigh more than the removed bridge structure? A bunch of the containers were removed too.
The po-boy nautical engineer in me says...flooded compartments, and no/not enough effort to pump them out.

Probably didn't bunker in the US. Too darned expensive. There was a time when ships used to make stops in the US just to bunker. Then the feds figured out that they could tax the heck out of what refineries were cheaply selling their waste oil for. That tax was so high that it no longer was financially advantageous to bunker here. I watched the bunker fuel business dry up and companies go out of business in short order.

Reminds me of what Reagan said were the nine most dangerous words. "I'm from the government, and I'm here to help".

Exactly. I use exit 42 off I-695 to access the Trade Point area of Sparrows Point. Exit 43 is a half mile further and the last exit prior to crossing the bridge (when it was there). Everything is barricaded now and you can't go further than 42. You can still access going north from 43 though, which I do coming home. All this has basically eliminated traffic and a quicker exit from Trade Point/Sparrows Point. I don't know anybody complaining about traffic either way. The trucks are getting product in and out as usual, ships are also dropping grain and cars and everything else every day, no impact.

In my opinion this whole thing was due to pure negligence on several parts, no conspiracy, evil intent or terrorist act. I will save what tin foil I have for wrapping my left overs...

Now if something could happen to fix traffic at the I-695/I-95 choke point back up, the I-695/I-795 choke point back up, the passage through Westminster on 140 and the two last lights (of the three) in Taneytown, and create a left turn lane in Emmitsburg at the Seton Ave........I'd be a happier camper! :) Commuting to Baltimore from Gettysburg and back everyday is definitely a grind!

That I-695/I-795 section is a "walk zone" daily as is the I-95/I-895 split during rush hour. One of my daughters used to work at Hopkins Bayview and is SO glad she changed jobs and doesn't have to deal with that daily. Happy I can now look at the MTA traffic cams instead of driving it.

It certainly is. In the am on 795 It is backed up and at as you say a "walk zone" if even that....all caused by those going towards Glen Burnie when they get to 695.....frustrating for those of us going towards Towson.

With any luck I only have a year maybe two left until I can say no more "grind" and not wander too far from my little shack on this mountain overlooking the battlefields.

T'isn't "apparently", me laddo; the word is "obviously". Without i do the research myself, i place little interest in the proof professed by another. I dont per-se believe anything, i merely try to file it as such-and-so said thus-and-such. Why must i believe in any side?
Believe it or not, there are still some people around that tell the truth.

For our members in the Baltimore area ….. how are things going or whats happening with the bridge?
Bridge debris completely removed and channel cleared. Marine traffic back to normal. Will be years before it is replaced.

Not much activity at all really. Construction on I695 at Exit 42 block off but can't actually see what they are doing. I see some activity at the base when I drive by it on Tradepoint Avenue but cant tell what's going on.

Once the cargo ship was freed everything died down considerably. Now, looking out my office window it looks like a large scale set up for a Evel Knievel jump across the water....the remaining parts of the bridge look like gigantic ramps on each side.

The Maryland transportation authority just got a $350 million insurance payout. The estimated cost to rebuild is 1.7 billion. Not much else in the news locally. RFPs for a new design are out. Demolition of the parts of the bridge left standing will be needed but hasn’t started yet as far as I know. While I no longer commute using the bridge I still used it regularly. The alternatives to go around have been extra jammed anytime around rush hour.

I wonder how long before some yeah-hoo tries it?

whats better? no crossing or some crossing?

google star ferry hong kong. they got it down to every 10mins..
an engineering marvel.
For me I like how it is now....traffic has been rerouted and the congestion is gone coming and going.....I will be long gone from this assignment by the time the new bridge is up......I HOPE....
