asterisk by serial number. Why? and

Asterisk by the serial number is a used gun that was returned to the factory and then sold as if it was a new gun. These are somewhat rare and deserve a premium.

The asterisk was used on guns that were returned to Ruger for any number of reasons. Some of the asterisk guns were the guns that were taken to shows such as the Shot Show and NRA meetings and show. Some also were factory seconds which have cosmetic problems only. Many of these guns were never fired after the test firing at the factory and many never left the factory at all. The asterisk was just a way of marking the guns so that they did not get sent out to be sold as new guns. They do not mark the guns now but just note on the box if it is a used gun or factory second. Some guns were marked with an S or U as well as the asterisk depending on when it was and how they decided to mark them.

When you say premium, what do you feel is right.

Say a used gun that sells for 300 normally with the asterisk would be worth 330? or can you be more specific?

Really depends on the gun.....I have a 4 digit BKH46 44 Flattop with an S stamp and I think it raises it's value immensely......newer stuff not so much....value is a really tough subject. I think your example is about right....see ya RR.

It depends on how collectible a model is without the asterisk. If it is a model that very few to no one collects then the premium may be nothing. Such as a model that is only wanted as a shooter then there would be very little to no premium. If it is a model that there is a big demand for, especially collector demand for, then the premium would be very high. Collector supply and demand, and of course pucker factor rules. It would be hard to put a premium on price alone. You would have to take each gun, model on it's own to determine a price premium. I know this doesn't help much but each gun has to be judged on it's own.

I don't have it nor have I seen it but it should be to my FFL next week.

PC-4 is the unit that my question is based on but this is good to know for the future too.

Thanks for all the replies.

FYI. The PC Carbines were made in Prescott AZ and they were sold to several Law Enforement agencies. Thus they provided armorer schools for them and it possible that yours could have been one of those. Probably no way to confirm that but it is possible. I did some T & E on the PC Carbines an I like them. Good luck with the PC 4. If the owner manual is not with it let me know, I will get one to you.

Hi Ruger168,
What is T&E?

This unit should have the box and manual with it but I really appreciate the offer. Anything else you can give as input is welcomed. I "collect" the P-series and this one is a keeper.

So I have been dealing with some tough times but finally got the serial number of my asterisk marked gun for the record books.

PC4GR
model: 04851
480-06650*

Just for the heck of it the other is;
PC9GR
model: 04751
470-18389

those would still be of a "premium", plus, as the are NOT out there anymore........I'd take it in a heartbeat.
Just have to pay attention to what was said above, the REAL serious "premiums" are on the older, scarcer, rare guns, and those usually marked with the "S" ,,,,,,,,,lots of the "used" or asterisk marked guns pop up every year after the shot shows, conventions, the nationals when they were held at Vandalia ,,Ohio and in this case, any "T&E" by some sort of agency.........used, refurbished, resold and marked as such.........
