Are OM Blackhawk and Super Blackhawk grips the same?

Guys, I looked at the 'sticky' about grip frames but was still uncertain about the grip panels themselves. And I did search but missed what I was looking for. So maybe one of you could give me a quick answer.

Wanting a set of Ruger-medallioned grips with a bit more figure to the wood than what is on my Supers, I see some ads saying their grips are for only a Super, other ads saying their grips fit both the Blackhawk and Super Blackhawk, so I am confused. I am not concerned with those very early, "long" framed Supers as my guns are near the end of OM Super production.

Thanks, Ralph Boineau in central South Carolina

The "long frames" you may be referring to, are of an even LONGER frame, made only a FEW , in the days of the mahogany cases, and they are about a centimeter longer than a "regular" OLD model Super, that has a longer frame than the Blackhawks of yore.............yes, check the link above or go to gun blast dot com, and see Bills article on "frames"........

Short answer,,, if we are strictly talking OM's here. Only Super grips will fit on Super frames. The Blackhawks are different.

Ralph,

This is what causes the confusion because some grip suppliers do not understand that the barrel length on NM SBHs determines which SBH has which grip size:

NM Super BHs:
The dragoon size grips with square back trigger guards are used on 7 1/2" & 10" barrel SBHs and all Hunter Model SBHs. These also interchange with all OM SBHs grips (except 'long frames') because OMs were only made with long barrels.

SBHs with short brl. lengths use standard .22 and Blackhawk, XR3-RED size grips.

The only exceptions of course are Bisley SBHs which are made in several barrel lengths.

Hondo is correct. But since I've been kinda following Ralph's purchases of OM Supers,,, I knew he needed the "short" answer.

Uh, I beg your pardon.........

Hunter Model Super Blackhawks are fitted with a "Dragoon" sized grip frame but they DO NOT have the
"square backed" trigger guards.

You're so right, word order makes a difference. Here are the exact same words in improved order for my intended meaning:

"The dragoon size grips are used on 7 1/2" & 10" barrel SBHs with square back trigger guards and all Hunter Model SBHs.

also depends on just "how nice" of 'factory ' grips you may want, otherwise you gotta have some made up like by Cary and have the medallions installed ,,but if you look hard enough there are some NICE factory grips out there to be found, like these........all new model, ,both Supers and XR-3 Reds......

I got these all from a dealer in PA, and sold them off in little or no time, they sold them selves...they are out there, you gotta LOOK , and ask.....keep trying
plus you can always swap out the medallions yourself, change the hardware (escutcheons & screw)

Here you go ,some new model S-47 factory grips, some with some MORE figure in them, just got these.....

( the picture does NOT do them justice, too much glare...)

but if you want "fancy" I'd contact Cary and tell him just what YOU may be looking for................
the stores, shops and auction sights have NO clue as to just what "size" you may be looking for, they don't know themselves..... we see folks buy a "pig in a poke" all the time, see it every weekend at any given gun show, and then they wonder why they don't fit, they're for a "Ruger"???? 8)
