AR-556 MPR

Yes! I've been wanting a Predator type AR from Ruger. If you watch the video Mark Gurney says that it has 5r rifling. It's a nice set of features and there is already one on gunbroker with a starting bid of $649! Hell of a deal for that rifle.
Hmmm... in a market place where there are a million and one different varieties of AR's, this one actually looks kind of attractive. 5R rifling? Should be a good shooter- particularly when paired with the upgraded trigger.

The MPR is a lot of gun for the money. Rifle length gas system, 18" 1:8 twist bbl, free float MLOK handguard, Magpul furniture, enhanced trigger. While the MSRP is around $900 the street price is $600-700. That's a very good bang for the buck for a rifle with those kinds of components.

I have been putting off buying an AR until the right deal came along . I ordered one of these from ACRYLICTNK yesterday . These AR's are spec'd out very close to what I would have had build , and at the prices they are going for it is a super deal . Will give a range report when it arrives and I get a chance to put some rounds through it .
Pretty tempting package. A step up from the standard carbine and a bargain to boot. I 'm sure I can't build an equivalent rifle for what the street price will be, not to mention getting warranty coverage.

Took the new MPR to the range today and burned thru about 100 rds of LC 193 & LC 855 , functioned perfect . I only have Magpul flip up /back-up sights on it right now , new scope & mount will not be here until tomorrow , so unable to really gauge accuracy , but @ 50yds I was drilling a hole basically with these crappy sights . It looks like it is going to be a great gun .

I got my new MPR today, needless to say was quite anxious to dive into it. I stripped it down for a basic cleaning and my bubble was busted. I immediately notice that the gas key was not staked. Mind you, I don't mean improperly staked, I mean not at all. I don't have a staking tool so I guess it's off to my gun shops gunsmith. Very disappointed in Ruger for failing on this, the most basic and perhaps one of the most important processes
I don't know much about staking gas keys so I looked the term up and it seems that it is not always necessary, maybe Ruger uses the torque and Loctite method that some other bolt carrier companies use (Young). Here's what I read, see the comments section regarding other methods besides staking:

I may not be able to provide a range report any time soon but appreciate the report provided by kooz. Thank you! (I scoped a Weaver Grand Slam 6-24 and am range-ready - just need to make the time.) I have inspected my rifle and am extremely pleased with the fit, finish, and trigger. Weight and balance are great. BCG runs smooth. Feeding/function is flawless with dummy rounds. Trigger break is impressive.
Bottom line: (my opinion) The MPR is a super value!
Your firing pin may actually be staked. I quote the following from the .net forum:

Those that have contacted Ruger about it have been told that Ruger stakes them in a way that they won't come loose during use, but can be removed by a gunsmith if necessary. Not sure why you would ever want to remove the gas key, but there must be some reason.
I haven't seen any complaints on this forum about AR556 gas keys coming loose, so I am going to take Ruger's word for it and not worry about it.

Steel blue is correct, there are other methods for attaching the gas key, my phase 5 nib bolt carrier group is not staked they use permatex and proper torque. Was skeptical at first, but after about 1500 rounds it shows no signs of loosening whatsoever.

Yes, I forgot to mention the phase 5 come from the factory with a line across the top running through the screws, the ruger mpr bcg is probably a fine assembly, I say run it hard and try to break it, I bet it'll hold up fine

Not saying this is the case with the MPR's BCG as the one I handled I didn't examine the gas key staking but many companies are now staking them from the side, not from the top as use to. Staking from the sides puts a ping in the metal that pinches the bolt heads. This allows you or a gunsmith to remove the bolts without damage but also keeps from backing out. Different solution but serves same purpose.

Well, it's your fault DEADUCK I'm the one that bought the one on GunsAmerica after your post. Isn't here yet but I'm waiting on it with baited breath, it'll jround out my "black" collection, got em all, most recently the SR762. Love em all, even the .22, it's kick ass. Of course I don't need to be buyin anymore, it's a dam disease I tell ya

Put another hundred or so rounds thru the MPR today, still 100% function , no problems. Got the scope mounted, so was able to shoot at 100yds today . Was having problems getting locked down in a good position on the bench with the shooting rests that I brought while having a 30rd mag hanging out the bottom . Anyways it was crazy easy to keep groups under an inch with M855 green tip Lake City, and that was with me fighting my rest/bench set-up .

I have a S&W M&P 15-22 (22LR) for inexpensive plinking and as a trainer for the AR platform. But I did not have an AR in 556/223. So I had my eye on the Smith Sport 2 or the 15T. Then last week I got a flyer in the mail saying my LGS was having "Ruger Days" with special promotional pricing. The MPR was offered at $519. I picked mine up Friday!
I havn't had time to clean it yet alone shoot it but it looks very well put together. And for the features at its price point I think it's a great gun. Time will tell and I'll be back to post my first impressions once I get it to the range.

They were $650 at a gun show today.
Purchased one when they first hit the streets. Great quality at an excellent price for sure. I’ve already upgraded some parts and plan to convert it to a piston driven rifle. I have run into a problem though, I want to upgrade the brake, but for the life of me cannot get it off. Has one tried this yet? Might have to take it to an armorer to get it off! They torqued the living heck out of it. I noticed there’s no crush washer behind it, yea I know because it does not have to be clocked since it a complete radial brake, but by gosh it didn’t need to be that tight!
