if cleaning vinegar is effective/ safe for cleaning firearms, particularly the areas with fouling. I know it's acidic.
 
Vinegar is good for cleaning windows, but you really should spend a few dollars for something designed specificially to meet the challenges of cleaning firearms.
 
I nearly ruined a Single Six cleaning it in vinegar, got sick and left it soaking for about a week, removed the bluing and etched the metal----DON'T DO IT!

I use Hoppes solvent...was just inquiring about vinegar as an alternative. It's not about the money!

For alternatives, I use Ed's Red. Uber cheap, odorless (good or bad depending on your point of view) and harmless to blued steel. I leave out the acetone and make it by the gallon:
