Another P95 thread

Been lurking for a while and first post here. I'd like to share my experience with the P95. I have not shot a gun in 30 years. Had a S&W Model 19 in the 70's, which was a very nice gun. Sold it a long time ago. I've been wanting to start shooting again and have been doing research on pistols for a couple of years now. The last few weeks, I decided it was time to buy. I was wanting a new gun in the 3-400 range. Since I have not shot a gun in a long time and never a auto, I decided I needed some pistol 101 training. I went to a local range, Target Master in Garland,Tx, for some basics. I ended up shooting a rental Beretta PX4. Nice gun. Shot the bullseye out of the target. Humm, Not bad for an old man who has not shot in 30 years, lol. However, it was the gun shooting very straight, not really me.

I had actually looked at the Ruger SR9 and the P95 before going to training last week. The SR9 is a really nice gun and the P95 seem to fit my budget. I bought a P95 last weekend at Academy Sports. I picked up some Federal ammo and went to the range yesterday. I have read many posts about good and bad with the P95 and can really apply to about any gun out there. I also read about cleaning a new gun, which I did, and breaking in a new gun. I loaded up the new magazines last week and let them sit, heard the spring needed some settling. So, my theory was to start with one round in each magazine and increase number of rounds as I shot. First shot out of the gun was a dead nuts bullseye. Humm, nice gun. I did fire 100 rounds and working up to six rounds in the magazines. I was not in a big hurry and wanted to enjoy this first outing with my new gun. I really wanted to not baby the gun but not hammer it first time out. Had no problems at all. Knocked the bulleyes out of two targets. Very, very happy so far. Very actuate gun. I just want to take my time with gun basics and safety right now. I'm very much of a newbie right now. Can't wait to go to the range again. I sure had fun.

I could not hit the side of a barn with mine and I had been shooting revolvers, including a S&W model 19... my favorite revolver by the way, for a long time... but I finally got this semi under control and decided I like it.... that was a while ago and I now have 3 of them.

Thanks guys. Man, I sure do miss my Model 19. It was 4 inch and I invested a lot of money in it to make it a sweet target gun. Very straight shooter it was. Kick myself in the rear many times for selling it. Seems like back in the 70's, everyone wanted a Model 29 (44 mag), Model 19 or Colt Python. Dirty Harry days ya know. I see you are from SC. My wife is from Charlotte and we go that way sometimes. Love Grandfather Mountain.

One thing that freaked my out about the P95 was the decocker. It took me a while to get used to using it as dropping the hammer with a round in the pipe. But got used to it. Practiced a few DA. Reminded me of the Model 19. I did shoot about 2 inches low in DA but I just need to get used to the long trigger pull. However, the trigger pull was very smooth in DA. Got used to DA real quick for that first round and going to SA for a quick double tap type group. Putting two rounds close together is going to take a lot of practice for me.

If you could swing a trip to Charlotte the first of October then maybe you could swing over to Chimney rock, just below Asheville for a day or so... that's when Contender is hosting the East Coast Ruger meeting/shoot.

For a long time I would use a combination of the decock lever and still ride the hammer down with my thumb.

As a fellow newbie, I can tell you that my P95 gets compliments from everyone who shoots it. Myself, I don't know enough to really know the difference between good and bad (of course maybe that's because I've been fortunate enough to have a quality gun as my first!). I got my P95 from a good friend who sold it to me for $150. In fact, it was the price that really pushed me over the edge and made me decide to buy it. Now that I have gained a little more experience with guns in general I sure appreciate the deal he gave me. I liked shooting it so much that the ammunition cost was getting to be a bit of a problem so I bought the SR22 6 months later so I could enjoy some guilt-free target practice. I'm sure what distance you were shooting from, it sounds like you're a much better shot than I (and I guarantee it's not the gun's fault)!

One more thing, every friend that shoots my P95 finds the decocker a bit odd at first, but they all get used to it. The left-handers really like the fact that it's ambidextrous.

Nice to see another new person that likes P95. Have had mine for about four years can not say anything bad about it. Liked it so much bought lc9. Lucky me got up this morning (fathers day) wife gave me sr22. Can not wait to go to the range. I know I should like it as much as my other two rugers.

Another trip to the range today to put another 100 rounds through my P95. This would be a total of 200 now since new. Just firing off Federal FMJ. I did buy some Federal 147g Hydra-Shok JHP but have not fired them yet. Another 100 rounds with no problems at all. However, I now have some comparision with other guns.

My Daughter and son-in-law went with me to the range today. My Daughter has never shot a gun at all. Ok, my bad since I sold my guns when my kids where little. But, time to catch up now. My son-in-law is the gun expert in the family as he grew up in a hunting family in the country. I was a city slicker that wasn't allowed to have guns. My son-in-law brought a Springfield 45ACP 1911, Sig sauer P238 .380, Taurus Millenium 9MM. And the good part, I rented a SR22 to start my daughter with. I had to fire off the first rounds in the SR22. Man, a sweet gun. Fit very well in my hand and dead nuts accuate. My daughter did very well with the SR22. We then moved her up to the Sig. She really liked that one. Fit great in her hand. She was shooting a little low so I clicked off a round to check the sights. This is the first time the Sig had been shot. Dead nuts bullseye. Humm, I guess it's sighted in, lol. I did shoot the Sig some more. Now, I'm going to have to rent a LCP for a comparision for me.

I did also shoot the Taurus 9MM Milenium. Wow, I am sooooooooo glad I bought a P95. I put that sucker down after only 6 shoots. That's all I wanted from it. Horrible trigger and kicked big time. My P95 is sooo smooth compared to the Taurus. The P95 trigger is extremely smooth and does not kick much at all.

Now, that brings me to the Springfield 45ACP 1911. OMG, what a gun. I could not beleive how good it felt to hold and shoot. Incredible trigger. I could double tap with no effort. Very, very smooth gun. However, my P95 is very close to how this gun reacted as far as recoil. Both guns are very simular in recoil feel. I was very supprised. Now, I am going to have to rent a Ruger 1911 for comparision.

A very fun day at the range and bonding with the kids with firearms.

Love mine too. My daughter shot it this weekend as a first time shooter. She had 4" groups from 30' on her first magazine!. Range owner wanted her to shoot his glock (because its so much better of a gun lol).

Nowhere near the same results. just sayin

My wife has a P-95 that she refuses to part with. I have found it to be an accurate and reliable firearm. As to your Dad's Glock "condition". It is ok, don't be ashamed, I understand that this can happen in the best of families.

Hey, my thread popped back up. I did go back to the range last weekend for another 100 rounds. Used Winchester white back this time. Ate it right up. Also, fired a few 147gr Hyda Shok. Still have had not one single problem with the gun. But, discovered a problem with the shooter by accident. I'll tell this story for other older shooters that maybe getting back into guns after a long layoff.

Since got I back into shooting the last couple of months, I have done all kinds of research on how to shoot again. Like, focus on front sight on so on. My pistol has the three dot sight system and I have been focusing real hard on the front sight with lining up the target. I seem to be doing ok and hitting the target real well. However, I have noticed I'm having a real hard time following and lining up the front sight, mainly on second quick shots. I wear glasses and am far sighted.

After I had gone to the range, I cleaned the gun and held it up to look down the sights. It was really the first time I had really seen the three dot system clear as a bell. I do not have my glasses on at this time. I had always shot my gun looking threw my glasses and the front sight had been blury this whole time. I remembered I haven't been able to see close up threw my normal lens since my mid 40's. I do wear bifocals but have been looking threw the normal lens area for the front sight. I feel like an idiot for not realizing this sooner, but so what. If I get normal sight picture and look over my glasses to line up the front sight, I should be able to follow the front sight better. Now, I'm really ready to back to the range to see if my shooting will improve since I can see the front sight clearly now with some work on working with my glasses.

Man, it's been a while since my last post here. I did reach a personal milestone yesterday at the range, 1000 rounds though the P95 since June. Not one failure at all. 99% of ammo has been 115gn FMJ Federal from Wally World. Very pleased with this gun, as it is my only gun right now. I've been working on reloads and drawing from the hoslter. I learn more each time out. Having a lot of fun with pistol shooting right now. I have been looking around for some different sights. Seems the Big Dot sights are the buzz word these days. I might need something that big to help with my sorry eye sight, lol.

Now, if Ruger still made the PC9, humm. That would be a good run&gun carbine to play with.
