I got this the same day as the out of sequence /prototype one.

It was offered on a smaller internet auction site for the whole world to see.
I don't think anyone else understood the significance

Those in the know will remember the # 3 started with SN 130-50000 so yep this is NUMBER NINE

Does it have all the early features and did you check with Ruger to see when it was made/shipped?
Ruger is notorious for NOT producing guns in serial number order.
 
it has the early features such as the one notch in the lever pin. Don't know when it shipped. I'm sure it won't be the 9th gun shipped as typically the low serial number were always shipped later so the low number subscribers would gun guns with all the bugs worked out.
 
Holy crap GB! Where you findin' all this stuff? I FINALLY found my No.3 in .22 Hornet, so I have a complete set of regular catalogued items now. But none with SN's that low!

Is the barrel tapped for scope mounts? And does it have the lever pin screw slotted on the left side only? Only 11 known, with SNs 50004 and 50010 being two of them!
 
Yep.. you got a pretty rare one there! Used to be 11 known.., now 12. Congratulations!! Might want to pass along the particulars to Chad so he can update the reference.
 
Maybe 13. Don't know if you included the out of sequence "prototype" I got from Amopskeag. That also has just the one slot and not drilled and tapped . The receiver reads No ! not No 3 so it was before they even made properly rollmarked # 3 Receivers
 
That rifle is in a class by itself because of the fact that it's a prototype IMO, but certainly it's got the characteristics of the very early receiver & barrel configurations. I guess that one is for Chad to decide...

You've had a great month!! As a HUGE No.3 fan, I'm completely jealous of course! :) (Actually, I'm just a regulation sized No.3 fan!)
 
funny thing I have no interest in the number 3's per say. Just bought these cause I recognized their uniqueness and I don't have anything close to a single digit gun. Number 9 I literally stumbled on while looking to verify a value on some old shot shell boxes. Thanks to google
 
Very nice find! Wasn't that one of the Herb Glass guns? He had number 9 and 16. Here are my two "number 9's". My No.3 has the slot on both sides and is not D/T, while the No.1 does not have the slotted pin on the right side.

Here are the copies of the three invoices I have here on 130-50009. Now I have more questions than answers!!

All three invoices state this gun is a 30/40 Krag! Did Steve Vogel mess up and put the wrong caliber on this invoice (note the "SPL-SKV"....that is Steve Vogel's initials).
Surely there aren't two guns with the same serial number ????
But if the invoice states 30/40, then why doesn't the shipping record??
And, was the gun really shipped twice, or maybe those at Ruger re-did the invoices after somebody figured the gun should have been no-charge to Amber.

Tom, I think the potato farmer had all the #9's and brokered off the ones he didn't need. You might try contacting him on this one for more info.
I would be surprised if any of the invoices I have copies of below somehow got separated from your gun. I got them from a big antique long gun dealer from Minnesota probably 20 years ago with a bunch of other good Ruger stuff that came from the Amber estate. Sent the originals of the #9 invoices I had to the then current owner of the #9 collection.

Wow... Interesting stuff! This looks like a typical case where someone from Gun Digest questioned the transaction or simply refused to pay the invoice, and ultimately a credit memo was issued to correct accounting. This is a pretty standard practice.

A credit memorandum does not necessarily imply anything would have been returned to Ruger. Most likely either Ruger discovered an unpaid invoice or Digest Books Inc. paid the thing, then discovered later on that they shouldn't have. The CM simply resolves the accounting.

I hope we get to hear how this turns out! :)

That's what I kind of figured also. As far as I know, Ambers guns were all sent to him as "NO CHARGE" per instructions from WBR.

I spoke with the potato farmer the other day. It was then I learned of the caliber issue. Ruger is sending me a letter but I'm guessing it will read Krag. Now looks like the gun may have been rebarreled but Krag to 45-70 sure seems odd to me. Hard to believe the invoice is wrong
 
I don't think the odds are very good that it was rebarreled. I'm thinking more an error writing up the invoices.
