ANNIE GET YOUR GUN...

I've got a thing about vintage photographs. Now, I don't have the faintest idea if this young lady's name was Annie or not. I kinda doubt it. But she definitely has her gun, doesn't she? And what looks to be a good rig to carry it in. I don't see any markings on the grips...what do you think? Custom grips? I don't know if she was really a deputy or sheriff or what, but she has the badge. She's got a look in her eyes, too, doesn't she? And that confident hand on the hip and the direct look into the lens just might say something about what kind of woman she was. Who knows? This is a reproduction of an old photograph made back in the late 1800s or early 1900s. She could have been a rodeo or wild west show performer, or she may have just been posing in a studio with props. We'll never know...but this kind of thing appeals to me on a visual and intellectual level...I like photographs that make me think...so I thought some other people might like to see it, too.

Hi,

Well, we can at least give her a name! And sorry, it's not Annie. Young lady's name is Lula Rogers... photo taken ca.1910-1915. It's quite likely originally from a postcard, adding to BIGDAWG'S idea of a staged and propped studio shot.

Not much other info, but what little I could find is here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/8623220@N02/3066022856/in/set-72157603624867509/

Looks like the original's in the Library of Congress if someone likes to dig in the archives. That's enough thinkin' for me today!

That's pretty cool. How did you track her down? I tried Googling all sorts of combinations, but never came up with anything. And the photo on Flickr shows better detail of the gun and gunbelt.

Hi,

BIGDAWG, I did like you and got nowhere, too. But one of the searches told of a site called http://www.tineye.com

If you have a link to a picture (right click your picture here and look at "View image info" for your link), you just copy and paste it in on their site. They say you can also upload an actual picture if you don't have a link. Supposedly it's smart enough to run some kind of comparative software like the facial recognition stuff on the TV shows, too. Helpful if you don't have the full pic?

Anyway, it has one of those counters, which said it took about two seconds to check a couple of billion sites! I was impressed, and our girl now has a name!

I like it that she's no longer anonymous. I actually bought the repro photograph from a place called Out West Photos...bought this one and another one, which I'll probably post. Out West Photos has hundreds of vintage photos...all reproductions, of course...but they do a good job of it. Again, it's a photograph that makes me think, you know? If it's a studio shot, why did she choose those wardrobe items, I wonder? And who was she and how old was she? She's long gone by now, of course, but in this photo, I find her quite attractive. Again, it's that direct and sort of challenging look into the lens that does it for me.

Hi,

She's kinda pretty in a way that reminds me of some of the early screen actresses. Built just a little "sturdy" but not necessarily fat. Clara Bow in particular came to mind, though Clara was but a wee thing when this picture was taken. I'd guess Lula's between about 18 and 22 here: maybe she was a model? If so, ya suppose the outfit was chosen for the shoot just like they are today?

As for "the look," that's one thing that makes me think she might have been a pro, used to looking right thru the lens in a way the eventual viewer just knows she's looking directly at him or her...

What else can we suggest for her "official" TRF bio? :)
