ammo choices

Does anyone have a favorite type of 45acp ammo for defensive use? Right now I've been using 230 gr RN.

230-FMJ is the only factory ammo I buy, and back when I carried a "Government Model .45" on duty, it's exactly what I used. As far as "a favorite" goes, I've always prefered USGI issue or Winchester Super-X (in that order) because to me, they seem to shoot harder than most of the others.....but hey, in the real world that probably doesn't matter nearly as much as knowing how to shoot matters.

I'm certain that someone will come along shortly and give a completely different answer, or maybe even a lot of someones with lots of different answers.

I carry Remington 230 grain HP. Has almost the same bullet profile and has never given me any issues.

If you roll your own Speer Gold Dot bullets either 200 or 230 gr with Hodgdon's CFE-Pistol powder. If factory ammo is wanted, Speer 230 Gr 45 ACP cartridges. The only kicker is trying to find either Gold Dot bullet heads or factory ammo.

When I carried a .45 it was filled with Winchester’s Black Talon ammo. An awesome round which became "socially unacceptable " thanks to the libs.
Remington’s Golden Saber has petals designed to expand the same way as Black Talon. Speer Gold Dot, Hornady Critical Duty, Federal HST are all good performing rounds. My personal favorite is still the Winchester Silvertip.

For God's sake ... Seriously ?

Shoot somebody with ANY 45ACP with ANY bullet and they're going down. Enough mall ninja BS.

Buy some decent name brand ammo ... Test 4 or 5 boxes in your gun .... and you're good to go.

Well.... ain't we just full of ourselves? I'm sorry Mr. Expert on what I choose for myself. I do believe that I used the phrase "My personal favorite"....along with what I believe is a pretty comprehensive list of some damn good ammo. So since when does someone's personal choices require empirical data? Really?

A "favorite", much like an opinion, is just that, an individual choice.
While some/many are based on data, just look at how many voted
for the Head Narcissist In Charge, based on nothing of consequence.

So ... you have an opinion based on what ? The color of the box ?

You could have said ... bullet performance ... fps ... feedability in your gun ... reliability in your gun ... gelatin testing ... accuracy ... etc etc ... but you didnt say ANY of those things.

So ... was it color of the box ?

I said it before and I'll say it again, GoldDots. In any caliber. Almost guaranteed to open up 100% of the time.

I might have to give 'em a try, but I have no complaints with XTP's. They are hell on deer and I'd expect no less on a perp. You are not the only person who has extolled a love for the Gold Dots, even for a hunting bullet.

I prefer to take a 148 grain hollow base wad cutter(38 cal) Hit it with a 3 lb hammer that free falls from a height of 27 inches. Then lube size it in my 45 cal lube sizer and load it with the hollow base up. Totaly devistating on barn mice.
Hope I covered all the required bases.

Prec 32 I just found and ordered some Rem HP 230 gr. was a great buy and gonna give them a try. The Fed Hydra look really interesting but have a really steep price to go with them.

The beatuty of .45acp is the fact that ,unlike say 9mm , there are NO JHP load that inherently suck. The effectiveness of .45acp jhp in a given bullet weight will be fairly close between the sorta average , and the "best".

Back when my car had a carbourater , I used 185 +P and 200 +P , from CorBon. Still fine ammo ( not withstanding the passing of the Flying Ashtray ) . But in recent decades the progress of 230 jhp's , combined with similar POI to common 230 fmj is a strong factor. My testing of WWB 230JHP ( in a particular Jim Higgenbothem testing protocol for penetration AND expansion ) has me carrying generic 230 jhp with full confidence.

With the plethora of * more than plenty good * choices, selection can be made on basis of reliability, accuraccy, POI/POA < anaivability , and yes price.

Meanwhile , if you personal set of actual/ percieved parameters skews to Reduced penetration of Bad Guys and building materials on purpose at the low end of "normal" JHP's , while still having reasonably decent stopping power, the 185gr Silvertip is still the standout choice. For that matter, if the parameters call for less recoil ( aka better controlability ) than standard 230gr loads, the std vel 185gr jhp as a class are the choice.

I carry Hornady Critical Duty +P 220 gr flex lock
The box is a well-designed, shiny silver with red and black letters. I love it!
It shoots well in my pistol and it makes me happy :)

Wow! That sir is some pretty impressive empirical type data of the style that will probably make some folks very happy.......
