Am I the only one that liked the P series pistols much, much better than the so-called "Hard R" line from Ruger? I miss the P89, and for the life of me, can't understand why it is no longer in the line up. They sold millions of them. I HATE the trigger pulls on the SR9. Just as I hate the Glock, and Springfield Armory pulls. I know that is why they build different pistols for different people, before anyone chimes in with that bit of info. But, in the .40 cal line Ruger still makes the P pistols, and they still make the P90 in .45. And they still have the P95 in 9mm. Just don't understand why they dropped the P89.

I too miss the P series. I think the P series are the best guns under 450 by far and best of all they are made right here in America. In time I'm sure that the P series will get a little more respect. I hope.

I too was surprised when Ruger dropped the P-89.

I doubt it but for me i just hate the look & feel of them (yes i realize they are GREAT in terms of depenabilty) & i've owned i think 3 P89's in the past :roll:
The SR line brought me back to Ruger simi auto centerfire handguns 8)

I bought a p89dc back in 96 wouldn't get rid of it for nothing love the way it feels and shoots. Not much ever said about them, never understood why.

I like the P's too. Had a P90.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if they dump the P90 in favor of a SR45 at some point in the future.

If they make a 1911, that will surely seal the fate of the venerable 90.

Smith dropped the gen 3's and is throwing everything they have into the plastic stuff.

I should clarify my above response with reasons. The SR9 is lighter, has a longer sight radius, is much thinner, has a much lower bore axis, and doesn't have the huge levers on the side.

Reliability was excellent on my first trip with the SR9, but it will take a long time to surpass the P944, if it's even possible as the P944 hasn't jammed since I bought it about 12 years ago. The SR9 has only run about 325 flawless rounds at this point.

I think that Ruger dropped the P89 to avoid self-competition between it and the SR9, as the deletion of the P89 coincided with the introduction of the SR9.

I suspect that they felt that the P-series 9mm hammer-action centerfire pistol niche was adequately represented by the more recent (and less expensive to produce) P95.

I personally think that the P89 was deleted too early in the production lifespan of the SR9, which suffered from some introductory hicccups. My personal feeling is that the P89, especially in the latter years of its production, had been refined/evolved into a pistol of exceptional merits and performance, but relatively unmarketed, unsung, relatively unrecognized combat pistol capable of performing and competing against far more expensive contemporaries-perceived more by its price point as opposed to its intrinsic capabilities and value.

I think that there might well be a co-existant market niche for a reintroduced P89 that would not necessarily vampire sales from the SR9 series. My suggestion would be for the basic, inexpensive, manual safety, black oxide finished manual safety P89, with the original lanyard loop mainspring cap-kind of a basic/retro combat/self-defense/general purpose Ruger 9mm.

Correctly priced and marketed (perhaps even as a William Ruger commemmorative), it could be an excellent basic gun suitable for many uses.

I have an SR9, and love it. I would like a P89. But, Ruger also quit making the six series revolvers to make the GP100.

I have a fondness for Ruger P-series because of the experience I've had with my P944. I realize though that Ruger will continue to produce what they believe will be most profitable. A part of me wishes they had kept refining the P-series. While I haven't shot one I came close a couple of times to buying a P345. It felt really nice in my hand but the politically correct features are somewhat of a turn off.

Companies have been making 1911s for a 100 years now! And Single Action Armies (or copies thereof) since 1873.

One thing I always find funny, is how many people complain of how big the P series guns are. Then they lust after a HK USP or some other pistol that is even larger. I honestly do not think, in my hand at least, that the P series guns are one bit bigger than Glock, Beretta, most Sigs, or about any HK pistol.

I enjoy shooting my P89, and I shoot it well. One has to keep in mind that is is not a target pistol, its a combat/self defense type gun. And mine will feed anything I try to run through it. Heck, I bet if I could get a coke can in the magazine, it would feed! Amazingly reliable gun.

I'd like to try a P89 or P90 because of the favorable reports on them. I don't care much how pretty a gun is. To me,it's mainly just a machine.

I have to agree with questioning the wisdom of ditching the P89 series. I have one I bought in the early '90's, a KP89DC. I love this gun. It is accurate, reliable, rugged and durable as all get out. While it might not fit my hand as well as, say, a Beretta, it fits well enough for me to shoot it well and will still be around LONG after the Beretta breaks it's locking lug and is junk. It's not glorious, it's not fancy, it's just a good, solid defensive gun that sold for a very reasonable price. I think so highly of it that my P89 is my dedicated bedside gun and I have a holster and mag carrier for it in case something happens to my Glock 21 duty gun. I can't think of higher praise than that, that I think highly enough of it to be willing to carry it on duty at the PD. I might try out a P95 sometime but I doubt it will ever replace my P89.

No you're not the only one. I wouldn't trade or sell my P-85 Mk II for anything. It was my duty pistol and as far as accuracy is concerned, I shot better than the other guys with their Sig 226's.
