Am I CRAZY or what?

Just traded my Alaskan 454 for a super redhawk 454 7 1/2 inch. I dislike the longer ugly looking barrel but it more than makes up on shooting it comfortably. It has tamer grips like the Alaskan, the longer barrel sure helps. Anybody says that they shoot there Alaskan confortably with 454, I look at them differently now. Last time to range after 12 rounds that was enough for me. At least this gun you CAN control. I am over 6 feet and 200 lbs so I know what to expect. I am not putting the Alaskan down but here in Texas I just don't need the aggrevation. Shooting is supposed to be fun not punishing. Thanks :?

It seems to me that you have made a wise decision. I cannot imagine the recoil from a short barreled .454.

You now have a fine revolver for either range use or hunting that can be loaded mild or wild, depending on the need.

I don't call anybody crazy for trading for what they want or need. Sounds like you now have a more versatle gun for use in your part of the country and a great deer gun if you hunt.
Neither one would be what I prefer, but wouldn't that Redhawk make a good intimidator as a home defense weapon?

I don't think your CRAZY ,,, However I have both and I am quit suprised you feel the Alaskan has more felt recoil.

IMO the Short Barrel let's ALOT of the powder burn in a big fireball outside the barrel, whereas the 9.5" of barrel allows for more powder burn down the longer barrel.

The 9.5" hits much harder in the palm of my hand.
The Alaskan does have more muzzel flip but not near the hit.

I have the 454 alaskan and mine is a joy to shoot. Extremely accurate for a short bbl. But I also shoot a 500 S&W 4" with 700 grain cast bullets. I honestly believe my sp101 has more recoil with hotter 357 loads. I also shoot 44 mag ruger only loads and 45 colt ruger only loads so the recoil isn't a issue with me. I really like my alaskan and wish I had one in 480 also. I have concidered buying a long bbled one and cutting it back to alaskan length. Maybe one day I will find one. I would like to also get a 475 linebaugh.

I much prefer touching off a 454 Alaskan over a LW 357. The worst part of shooting full house 454s is the concussion not the slap in the hand. That is part of the whole perceived recoil thing though. I have never shot a longer barreled 454 so I can't comment on the difference. If you prefer the longer barrel then have at it.

I don't think your crazy. Hott 44 mags are all I want to handle for woods defense situations. Mild 44 mag loads are all I shoot for fun. I see not sense in punishing yourself.

These big caliber guns are like your car ........ I use appropriate power for the given task ..... and I never just wire the throttle wide open and drive around town.

But I do go out in the back 40 and open up once in a while to keep my edge.
