Are octagon barrels (for handguns) made using sleeves? I've seen one or two that appear to be sleeved; I have a Freedom Arms on order and am expecting not to see a sleeve. Is there a specific process in making an oct. bbl. ? Just a curious old guy...

They are made round and have the flats machined later. Many blanks that the drill wandered but the bore is otherwise fine have been milled octagon on centers to true them up and make a barrel that normally would be scrapped into a great usable tube.

and we used to take old .22 cal.octagon rifle barrels, ,cut them down as needed and lined them ,if needed, and make up stuff over the years......but yes, as noted above, "new" ones are usually milled for the 'flats' ......
wish I had a nickel for every octagon barrel that I used to draw file, recut the flats, all by hand!!! 8)
