I see often, claims that certain .308 rifles can use AI style magazines.

In spite of searching, I've discovered many references to them, but never what they actually are.

What is an AI magazine?

Yes AICS showed, but I still don't know what makes them different. Is it a type of mag or just a brand. Otherwise why do some rifles specifically say.they use AI mags when the photo shows something else.

The AI mag is a single stack style mag while the regular RA mag is a rotary style. The AI mag is the style that comes on the GSR rifle.

Where I'm still going with this...The Precision Rifle says it can use AI magazines and some M-14 magazines. The Scout Rifle says it uses metal box magazines but doesn't say which ones. Are magazines between the two rifles designed to be interchangeable? Or does each rifle require its own or even a proprietary magazine? Nowhere does it say so. Or as with other cheap plastic magazines, is it luck of the draw?

Ruger is attempting to show more products that do not use proprietary magazines. I am specifically looking to get a Scout Rifle in .308, but their website only says it uses a detachable box magazine and shows a photo of a metal magazine. Nor does it say AI magazines can be used. If they're still using proprietary magazines, I'm not yet interested.

AI or AICS (Accuracy International) designed a specific type of metal box magazine for use with their sniper and tactical rifles. This design has been adapted to several detachable magazine bolt action rifles including specific models of the Remington 700 and are factory supplied magazines for the Ruger's Gunsite Scout and Precision rifles. You will see them referred to as both AI and AICS type magazines. They are not proprietary to Ruger but are used in many different rifles.

The most common supplier of these magazines is Accurate Mag ( http://accurate-mag.com/magazines/) but Magpul is also making polymer versions. They are available for 308-family, .223/5.56-family as well as some long action cartridges.

Thank you. I knew there must be an answer.
