I abhor self checkout and even more so hypocrisy. A while back I snapped this pic at a Walmart showing several "Investing in American jobs" above the self checkout lanes. Well it seems as if there are many other people who have a problem with Walmart (I generally don't shop there any more) and they're rethinking their self checkout deployment strategy.

I have a love / hate relationship with them.

Love - speed, ability to bag without destroying things (pre sort for home too)

Hate - the lack of service if needed, the hiccup that makes someone come clear the machine, the fact that the scanner isn't as sensitive as the ones used by their cashiers (you have hold things just so) The scale being slow to respond so it locks up because you are faster than a computer.

Bottom line, get enough cashiers, train baggers how to bag, make self checkout express lane only and I'd gladly go back.

I reckon I don't understand why you want to avoid people. I've made several new freinds at my grocery store whom I see on a regular basis. One man who I met there has a wife afflicted with MS, and we have prayed together right there in the grocery store aisle.

Sometimes I do feel as if I've brightened up somebody's day. That's a good feeling!

My local Walmart offers both. There's always at least a 10-12 lanes open for those who prefer standing in line 2-3-4 times longer than necessary, while waiting on a cashier to check them out...More power to 'em.
Me, my SOP is to get in, get what I'm after...Pay, and...GET THE OUT!
So, I always go to the self checkout kiosks anymore, then quickly and happily hit the door running.

Figure at $20 an hour, if it takes me 15 minutes to check out my own, they either owe me 5 bucks or something is not getting scanned. I have asked around and it seems I am not the only one with this philosophy.

I avoid self check out. I'm paying for the service, including bagging. I won't do the work I'm paying others to do.

The way to end self checkout is for no one to use it. Think of it as a customer strike.

Same here. In fact a few weeks ago I was in Wal Mart in the morning, and they hadn’t opened up the self checkout lines yet. I left and went to another store.

I avoid going to a line with a cashier at all costs.

I guess the only exception is Trader Joe’s, they don’t have self checkout lines.

I like self checkout, I used it today. I pull all the change out of my pocket and feed it into the machine. I don't have to bother counting how much change I'm getting rid of, the machine counts it for me.

Trader Joe's, is the way it should be done. You push your cart up to the cashier. They remove your purchases from the cart, scan it and bag it. All you have to do is pay for it. Heck, they will even, and always offer to take it to your car for you. Maybe the offer is because I am old. But no other food outlet even offers any of this.

at Sam's Club we use the app, scan the items as we put them in the basket and head for the door, no waiting in lines

I assume that supermarket chains have calculated that they save more money with self checkout lanes than they lose through theft. Unless the person assigned to monitor the self check out area is really vigilant, it seems to be awfully easy to hit the "Pay Now" button on the screen while you still leave a few items in your shopping cart, then after the receipt comes out, adding those items to the bags. And I'm sure that there are other ways to scam the system, but the stores seem to still consider it good business.

The supermarket where I normally shop recently put us signs by the self check out area that say "Express check out for 10 or less items only". I haven't seen anyone stopped from using the machines who have more than 10 items in their cart, but maybe that will come later.

Sure about Publix? I guess they may have sold out to or bought Trader joes, but they have been around down here forever.
Aldi has actually two different companies that own different Aldis. One is owned by a Muslim group and One still by the Germans.

Twice I asked a cashier why no registers were open and was no "no stsff" while 5 or 6 workers were "supervising" the self checkout. I left my cart full of groceries next to them and said "well then you better find someone to put that back". Now, when they see me they open a register......my wife was horrified

This is what we do. I would do it everywhere if it meant I didn't have to stand in line.
One thing about self checkout: if you expect me to check out my own stuff then don't ask me anything when I walk out the door. If you think I'm going to steal from you then you need to have every line you got open. If I have to check myself out then I'm not going to stop for some moron standing at the door.

Around here there is self checkout for almost everything from grocery’s to hardware. My theory is if you aren’t reducing your prices and you want me to do your work once I pay for my stuff the shopping carts stays at the self checkout register . Also if I use a cart to take my stuff to my car the cart is left were it won’t roll and hit someone car not in their cart corral .

I fell that pertty soon we are going to have to stick the shelves for them

Prior to self check out, supermarkets had express lanes (10 items or less). Those lanes always had people with 20-30 items in their cart, as I (somewhat) patiently stood there with my milk, bread and eggs.

At Publix down here checkout gals would ask the peeps with more than 10 items to go to the other line

In some North Texas WM they are taking the self check option away. The stores are having too much theft, cutting the profit. I've seen people scan one item and put two in the bag or just not scan them at all. The door greeters are back checking carts again too.

I've never used a self checkout in my life, and won't....Reason is, I know that the sole purpose of those things is to eliminates someone's job, and I refuse to be a party to that.
