On another forum I stated my preference as to buying used guns. I always wanted good condition revolvers, and preferred Rugers or Colts. Not so with my friend, the late Bill Zuber.
Bill was tall, balding, wore dark rimmed glasses, and had the most pleasant of bearings. Talked to everyone on the range. Always dressed nicely, sport shirt and slacks, no jeans or T-shirts, nice shoes. He was a professor at the University of Memphis, a chemistry professor, I think.
Bill would show up with the most unusual of guns at times. It might be a Japanese Nambu one week, a Ruger Single Six .32 Magnum (formerly mine), a Merwin-Hulbert, a non-descript top break another. I believe he even showed up with an old flint lock pistol once. It didn't matter to Bill, if it would fire, he would buy it, or trade for it. And he was just an all-round nice guy who loved to shoot.
We were saddened to learn one day that Bill had died of a heart attack during the week. Shortly after his death, his widow sent two cards, one to the shooting range, and one to the gun store where we all hung out. She thanked us all profusely for being his friends, for contributing so much to his joy in life.
Never met her, but they must have been one fine couple.
