A Question of Locks

All of my Ruger revolvers are pre-lock. My only catalog is the 2010 and I cannot find any information on the lock or how it works.

Could someone give me a short tutorial on how the locks work. Including:

What would happen if you lost your "key"?

If your revolver is "locked" and you want or need to use it what steps does it take to "unlock" it and get it into service?

Can you disable the lock so that you do not have to deal with it?

A quick search did not find my answers but I am sure these questions have been delt with in the past. Please pardon my ignorance.

Rugers with the lock are shipped with a grip pannel that has to be drilled to use the lock or the pannel removed. If you don't use it you just ignore the lock. Never heard of one malfunctioning. If you lose your key contact Ruger to get a new one or post a wanted in the classifieds. Havn't heard of anyone ever using the lock. Someone would probally send you a set. Also have heard a handcuff key works but don't have access to one to try.
Do a Google or Yahoo search. I tried our search an got overload.

Ruger had the good sense to put their locks where they belong, out of sight...and you can effectively forget they are ever there. Even Taurus had the good sense to put theirs on the hammer, and not the sideplate!

I wish they didn't come with one at all, but since they do, they are at least done correctly. I've never heard of one engaging unintentionally, like the S&W ILS. I won't buy a S&W revolver with the ILS. It can be removed, but there is still a visible hole, even if plugged. More than that, though, it offends my sensibilities...what little I have. :wink:

My only beef with the lock is the soft mainspring that comes with it.
I'm OK with a soft spring on my small bores but a .44 mag. or hot loaded .45 Colt I want a full power mainspring!

This is my issue with it as well. I wish my Flattop had the same spring as my Bisley.
