Don't know! Maybe the gun was going to have "chrome" grips put on it or had some on it back then... the walnut grips on it look like they have been on it a long time...

I thought about that too..but the grip frame doesn't show any sign of ever being off the gun, and the older folks always seen refer to grips as "handles".. so I figured they meant chrome grips..
