Not sure... the one I got from him does not have that... maybe some kind of epoxy filler?

I did notice something about the original sheath .... it is left handed.

I bought one of these knives to give to a good friend who is a Jeremiah Johnson fan and he is a real out doorsman.... if he had lived 200 years ago he would have been a mountain man for sure.... I needed to have some kind of paper work with the knife for when I give it to him and developed this one:
