8-SHOT SP101 22lr

Ruger sent me their new .22 Long Rifle SP101. This new model carries an 8 holed cylinder. .22 Short, .22 Long and .22 shot cartridges can also be fired from this revolver.

Included in box: Instruction manual, action locking device and a single pre-fired cartridge case.

8 chamber cylinder

Rear sight is both elevation and windage adjustable

Front sight is a dovetailed fiber-optic

Five pull average of 3 lbs 14.4 oz. – SA

At the range Federal Value Pack 36gr HP and CCI Mini-Mag 36gr HP ammo was tested.

Firing pin strikes appear sufficient

7 yards – 8 shot group with CCI, offhand

7 yards – 16 shot group with Federal, offhand

I have to say it is a fun handgun to shoot. The weight and balance made handling effortless. This SP101 will make for a fun plinker or to teach the novice and youth handgun fundamentals.

Very nice review, as usual. Do you know when Ruger will actually have these for sale to the public? I have been waiting a long time for a good quality, decent-priced .22 revolver. I used to own a Taurus Model 94 back in the 90s, but it lacked the quality of a Smith or a Ruger.

Looks like a fine little revolver Ruger built there. I'd be proud to own it.

I'd have to change out that front sight, but it is hard to please everyone completely. The sight is no biggie.

And I can understand this, mainly because he can't shoot worth a darn to begin with :lol: But I wished they would have brought this gun out with shorter bbl. say a 3 incher maybe, or as a option. :wink:

I would prefer the .22 in the identical configuration of my current 3" SP101 .357. Same barrel length, same fixed sights, same trigger feel and as near the same weight as possible. The fun aspect of having a plinker is one thing, but the "cross training" utility is a whole nother thing.

This one is still on my short short list, and I will have one as soon as the funds are available, or I find a dealer with one willing to do a trade.

Handled one at my local gun shop today.Man said he ordered it from his distributor one day,got it the next no problem.I think he had $559.00 on it?I did not like the hammer. Too hard to pull and too far back to pull it.My thumb ran out of pull before I got it back.Doubled my thumb up too much or something.

I don't think the gun is ugly, but the grip is too small/disproportionate. With the longer barrel, the gun needs some type of target style grip to look in balance. I'm buying one anyway,and will worry about the grip later.

A lot of people have put the Hogue grip on their SP-101s. While recoil is not an issue on the .22 LR version (if it is you need to turn in your 'man' card) the overall look may be better. I like the detail on the stock wood grips myself and I'll probably keep them on the gun when I get it.

I have the same identical Hogues on both of my SPs, the .357 & .22.
Perfect fit for my hand and that gun.

There's a strong possibility of a .22 Mag version, but I doubt it'll be an 8-rounder.

Remember, it costs just as much to make one in .22 as it does in other calibers - they just don't have to bore the holes as big.

I like a lot of things about this piece. The only two things holding me back are: 1) the crappy sp101 trigger and 2) I wish it had a full lug. I think being an 8 shot makes a lot of sense. I'm not wild about 10 shooters. I think the dovetailed front sight is a great idea. And the ones (pics) I've seen, look well finished. I'd swap out the grips with the Hogues though.

Took it out again and we put somewhere between 200 and 300 rounds through it. No problems whatsoever. Very fun to shoot, we were squabbling over who was gonna shoot it next.

I ran ~400 rounds through mine today; just picked it up yesterday. I was very impressed with everything except the trigger. It is HEAVY! Hopefully it will smooth out after a few hundred more pulls.

Switching to the Hogue grip made a big difference for me too.

Shown here with my S&W 34-1. The S&W has an outstanding trigger, but is just too small for me. I got the Ruger to actually carry and use/abuse in the woods. I think it will fit the purpose perfectly!
