77/44 Questions

Over the past few months I have read quit a few posts on various web sites about the 77/44. The comments people have made about the lack of accuracy does not make me want to jump up and run out and buy one. Are they all like that, is there some thing one can do to improve accuracy. What I seem to notice most is that the groups are 4" or greater at 50 yards. Any ideas?

I don't own one but I know they shoot better than that. I own a Deerfield and a 96/44 and they will both shoot 3" groups without any problem. One thing about the 44 mag cartridge is that it will never be as accurate as most rifle calibers.

Most of these issues are folks shooting reloads that work well in a handgun at 25 yards.

If you want match accuracy, you must load match ammo. Same headstamp brass, firm crimp, good bullet pull and a good bullet.

The last one I had would shoot about 1 1/2" at 100 yds with Ranier plated bullets.

Sadly, Nosler has dropped their 250 gr Partition bullet, the best one of them all for the little rifle.

I also have a very accurate 77/44. Inch or so at 50 2 at a hundred. Whatever bullet you choose run them as hot as you can with a heavy crimp. Typical whatever is cheap 240 grain factory ammo typically produces less than stellar results. Seems like these guns prefer heavier bullets.Mine likes anything I feed it. With a slight preference for the previously mentioned Noslers. I got a hoard of them when I heard they were being discontinued. Only real common problem with the gun that can impact accuracy is a crappy trigger. Easy fix and it did tighten groups up for me.

I have a 77/44 with a vortex red dot on it and my holes touch in the target at 50 yds. I shoot 240 grn swc's from Missouri Bullet Co. My dad also has one and shoots factory ammo and mine consistently outshoots his with my reloads (I always attribute it to my skills though! LOL) I'd say if you want a 44 carbine I wouldn't hesitate to go with the 77. I'm sure glad that I did!

I have several models of the 77/44 and would not trade them. I have not had a problems, but agree with the one post that the 44 mag is a pistol round. I use my for deer and it has always dropped them in their tracks with accuracy shooting 240 gr hornady.
