77/44 ordered one today!

After pestering everyone here and on the Marlin forum I decided to get the new bolt action 77/44, went to the gun store and ordered it, paid for it...and now I wait for it to come in next week sometime. Hope its a shooter out to 100 yards at least and lots of fun to shoot. Any encouragement that I did a good thing is of course a good thing! Thanks, Dennis

Great choice. You will enjoy it. Mine is very accurate, a 44 is not going to be effective over about 125 yards maybe 150. Mine will shoot about 1.5 inches at 100 yards. I reload and have found most any bullet around 250 grain with a max load of H110 or 296 is very accurate.

Great move. I got mine (a used one with the wood stock) last week. Makes big bang, big holes in paper, lots of fun. I've only tried it twice with a set of commercial loads (Federal, S&B, Hornady), so not enough time to really test accuracy. Right now, even with a less than ideal scope (Bushnell Banner 1.5-4x), I'm getting 1.5" groups at 50 yards, which I am happy with for now. I'll start handloading in a couple of weeks (waiting on primers) and suspect I can do better.

I bought a used one last year mostly just for the heck of it, but it has been a fun little rifle and I usually take it to the range.

I've mostly shot cast bullets in mine, but tried some XTPs early one and it shot the 240 and 300s pretty well. With cast, I've tried bullets from 165 to 320 grains and they do pretty well. Nothing is benchrest match accurate but I didn't expect it to be either.

A lot of people don't like the magazine length, saying it's too short. Everything I've tried fit OK. The cast 320s are really long, but they seat deep too. It seems to feed anything that can be loaded in it. I've got a mould that cast a full wadcutter of about 210 grains, and it feeds those just fine.

It's no target rifle, but it does OK. It's smaller than most rifles (even .22s) and swats pretty hard.

Just picked up my new one this afternoon. First impressions: Beautiful little rifle. Nice fit and finish for an all weather gun. Looking forward to shooting it on Thursday but I really like the pre-shoot ergonamics. Dennis

Took the 77/44 to the range for the first time this morning. Could only shoot it at 25 yards. Trigger could be a little lighter but is okay. Bolt needs to be moved forward with some vigor but is okay. Rifle shooting a little to the left so I need to move the rear sight a little. Decent groups. Not any difficult recoil with light reloads or with full factory 240gr load. This little rifle continues to grow on me! Dennis

The trigger can be improved. Timney offers a replacement sear for the 77/22 but it also works in the 77/44. I did this with mine and trigger is much lighter just about three pounds. Still has a bit of creep though. You can also replace the whole trigger assembly with a rifle basix unit. The replacement sear is about 45 and the rifle basix unit is about 85.

Dennis: You'll love it. I have an older blued/wood one but it has been extremely fun. As far as the bolt goes that will work in better after some shooting. Mine will still get difficult, mostly with the XTP type hollowpoints, every once in a while.

Several members on here fired it when we were in Fredericksburg and all thought it was a great little carbine.

I prefer the new 77/44 to my old 44 auto carbine. Different strokes for different folk.

The 77/44 is a recent addition to my gun safe and I'm quite impressed with it. It's light, handy and so far has provided acceptable but not great accuracy at 100 yards with Hornady LeverRevolution ammo. It's also been called on for some quiet, close up predator control using .44 Specials. I installed a Volquartsen sear which has brought the trigger pull from 6.5 lbs. down to 3.5 although with a very slight creep.

This rifle has quickly become my favourite farm gun. Plenty of stopping power for coyotes or larger predators. Small and light enough to always have close at hand.
