I have been having a problem with my magazine not feeding. More like jamming to be honest. I ma not sure if it is my fault when loading the mag or if something else is going on.
Somehow shells lower in the mag are getting their rims in front of the upper shell. "Rims" probably isn't the proper term but I don't know it so that is what I go with. When the rim of the lower shell gets forward of the top one, it keeps the top shell from sliding forward into the chamber. It only does this on occasion and it usually will be most of the mag that have the rims mis-aligned.
If it was consistant, I could track it down to me or a bad magazine but I have gone nearly a full box of shells without a jam and then the next mag is all jammed up.
I have read that there are some questions about how many the mag holds. FWIW, mine easily holds five.
Other than this, It has been a great gun. I just hung a Redfield Revolution 3-9x40 on it but haven't sighted it in yet. It was pretty decent with just open sights though. I went back and forth on putting a scope on it for a while. My failing eyesight is what made the decision. I just can't see the sights on both ends of the gun anymore.

thanks, Matt

Welcome to the Forum. That condition is called rim-lock and is most common with 38 specials. Is that what you are using instead of 357 magnum cartridges? 8) 8)

Actually the first box I put through it was 38s and never had a problem. I have put two boxes of .357s through it and had several jams. It has been consistent. If the first two rounds chamber, they all will. If either the first or second jams, the rest of the mag will be rim locked.
Thanks for the proper terminology!

I can't imagine why those cartridges would ride over the rim unless you inadvertently loaded them that way or something. I don't have any 357 magazines but I do have (6) 44mag magazines and they work very well. Perhaps a call to Ruger is in order.

You might try and see if you can load one round with the top rim behind the next rim instead of in front of it. 8)

The last three or four magfuls I ran through it, I was very cautious when loading. One of those mags rim locked on the second shell and each successive shell. I know they weren't rim locked when I initially put the mag in the rifle. I am going to order a second mag tonight and see if it does any better.

I sent my magazine back to the Ruger service department and I just received the new one back from them. The problem I had we not rim lock, but the shaft which runs through the magazine bent, causing the magazine to jam. I am 62yo and not vert strong, so the material the shaft was made out of was very soft. Maybe my shaft missed the heat treatment or something. I like the rifle, but the quality control hasn't been very good, and Ruger should look at the material used for the shaft. I wish they would make a 10 round bannana type magazine like the 10-22. Anyway you could probably send the bad magazine back.

basmntdweller, I think that I had that happen once, not sure, I have shot several hundred rds. & no problem. last shooting session I had one round that would not chamber & I took the magazine out & pushed the rounds down three or four times & then it worked. It never happened again. If you like iron sights, try out the New England custom gun's Ruger 77 peep site. I didn't want a scope on my 77/.357 so I bought this peep. it's very good quality & let's my tired eyes keep shooting with iron sights for now.
