Anyone else have this problem ? 77/17 HB target,CCI ammo,just about every case ends up with split neck,also report seems extremely loud..Going to try another brand.

I only use Hornady and haven't seen this problem.
Hi Not that I am the smartest guy in the world but by the looks of the case on the right it looks like the cases are corroded maybe stored in a leather pouch or damp belt loops it wouldn't take long in those thin cases if they show any corrosion or green on them don't shoot them just a thought

I don't know about the magic .17s, but are you sure you are using the right round in the rifle?

I have 4 .17's and never had any case necks split. There was a case splitting problem with Hornady's early .17 Mach II, but that has been fixed.
The case's you show look more like a rupture rather than just neck splitting, and the ammo does look corroded, but pic's aren't always what they seem.

Although more in the early days, FWIW there have been "lot numbers" of ammo over the years that had problems in some to all SAAMI chambers.
Mostly split necks in the 17 Hummers; base bulges in the HM2's.
No idea now, but in the early days CCI loaded all the 17 Hummer ammo under their name, for Hornady, Remington and Federal.

I shot some Winchester Supreme today w/o problems. I've found some lots of Hornady are less accurate than others. I was bragging about how accurate my 77/17 was and one day was going to prove it. Pulled out a fresh box of ammo and best group I could shoot was 1.5".

Believe it or not but this is how mine shot right after I bought it.Going to try something other than the CCI's later this week.

Target shot by Hummer #2, the next to the best 17HMR I've owned that was shot 10 years ago on it's first sight-in and range session. A Marlin 17VS I dolled up with a Rifle Basix Target trigger, BKL mounts, 4-12X40 Premier scope, 2 shortened 5-shot magazines, hand lapped the barrel and bedded it - all before it was ever shot. After sight-in at 100 and a box to get used to it... I moved out to 200 that would me my PBR for ground squirrels with this rifle. This is a 5 shot group at 200 yards off a bipod with Hornady 17gr V-Max sorted ammo (and it shoots sorted CCI 17gr TNT's to almost the same POI). It has always been an approximately quarter MOA rifle when all the ducks are lined up right with these two lots of ammo (I have a lifetime supply of both for it).
My #1 Hummer could easily out shoot it, but #3 Hummer couldn't.
