This past weekend Son, Grandson and I went to a fly-in. Son and Grandson decided since the sun was coming up it was time to wake everybody up and get the show on the road. Those that have heard a SNJ/T-6 pulling 36 inches of manifold pressure and the prop going sonic know you ain't going to sleep through it

I don't know about the rest of it but I do know what a T-6 with props going sonic on take off sounds like as it flies about 20' over your head. Seemed it was a requirement before he took me up in it to stand on the runway and tape him taking off right at me. He was a smart %$# about it too. Off the deck about 2000' away coming right at me (amazing this tucked away airport has a 5000' runway) I decided to move a few feet to my left.

Pilot adjusted to his right coming straight at my noggin. I looked over at his father and buddy safely off to the side of the runway, sort of smirking at me and again, moved a few steps to my left. Pilot adjusted a second time, now about 800' away and I finally got it. Test of manhood or stupidity, take your choice. I went for stupid and stood there as those props were coming. Sure, a thrill but who would sympathize if anything went wrong? Most likely I would have wound up here in a post titled, "Deserved Darwin Winner."

Thing I liked best was when they started that engine. Sounded like an old man coughing, spitting, choking to get breath and then pa-plow! Everything disappears in a cloud of smoke that smells wonderful.

You don't really start a radial. You try and revive it back to life from the dead

Basically, a radial engine won't start if: A) the phase of the moon is wrong, B) you look at it funny, or C) you or it is in a bad mood

Loved the sound of the SNJ's that the Navy used for trainers when I was a kid. Guess they were from NAS Pensacola, Whiting Field, Saufley Field and Corry Field, all near my hometown of Pensacola Fla. Beautiful planes you've posted!

The FM2/F4F was owned and restored by Conrad Huffstutler who is a friend of ours. His Cub is in the above picture. He is just an unbelievable Guy/Kid. He and my Grandson hang out quite a bit. He sold the Wildcat which was a Grand Champion Warbird a year or so ago.

Conrad on the Left Yea he really is that young.

Gotta love all those glorious puddles of oil, avgas, blood, sweat, tears, coffee and whatever else drips out on the ground, surrounded by magnificent piles of kitty litter! Oh, yeah, throw in just a touch of smoke, too. (Imagine trying to win WWII with EPA's "help"!) Nice demo of a "wet" plug the fellow pulls out, too... :shock:
