We're building a 500 Maximum and recently heat-treated the cylinder. Thought some of you might like seeing how cherry-red it is when it comes out of the furnace:

It's 1,600 degrees before it gets oil quenched. After the oil bath it's tempered at 500 degrees. The end result is Rockwell 41.

Doggone! Look forward to seeing this one done!

Hey, I've never seen steel-toed loafers before! :)

Cool project!
I lost it when I read mike's steel toed loafers comment. Of course, who am I to say anything. I needed to do a quick weld the other day. I was caught by a friend,, I was barefoot while welding.

When I weld at home I normally go barefoot....

Lee, what type of steel is the cylinder made out of. 1600 degrees and oil quench sounds like O-1 tool steel but the finish hardness sounds too low.
