50 years ago today...

I was not a fan of the show, and in 1968 I gave up television altogether. I have never seen any of the movies or the hybrids that came later.

Those of you who are, and some who aren't MAY find this story interesting!

The original pilot (The Cage) was shot at Desilu, in spite of its expensive price tag, which took Lucy overriding the Desilu Board of Directors' decision to refuse to produce it. The pilot was finally produced and shopped to CBS (Lucy's 'home' studio) who turned it down.

Roddenberry then took it to NBC who wasn't crazy about it either, but Lucy's influence and persistence got things to happen. The network did something startling - They nixed the original pilot, but then requested a 2nd pilot! Desilu was again fighting with its owner, Miss Ball over the huge costs of the 2nd production, and Lucy once again overrode the Board. Only this time she ponied up some $$$ out of her own pocket to handle the production costs. She was sure this thing was gonna go.

The 2nd pilot was completely different from the original, and brought Shatner and other original cast members into the picture. That one took, and even with some rough ratings at first, it finally got going.

So you trekkies - You can thank Lucille Ball, for without her influence, there would be no Star Trek! ;)

Kirk: --------------Computer, go to sensor probe. Any unusual readings?
Computer:------- No decipherable reading on females. However, unusual reading on male board members. Detecting high respiration patterns, perspiration rates up, heartbeat rapid, blood pressure higher than normal.
Kirk: --------------Uh, that's sufficient. Strike that from the record, Mr. Spock.
Harry Mudd: -----Men will always be men — no matter where they are.

As we speak I am in the process of reading "The Fifty Year Mission". It is an oral history of the first 25 years of the show and the spin offs and told by the many people that were on the show as actors, the producers, writers, and directors. Very interesting if you are anyway interested in the Star Trek shows.
